I’ve only recently dived into the world of Avowed, and it seems like gamers everywhere are joining me on this adventure! Obsidian has once again pushed the boundaries with their latest RPG masterpiece. This semi-open world game is a visual feast, and its innovative narrative keeps me hooked. It’s got all the classic elements of a fantasy RPG that we’ve grown accustomed to, making it an exciting journey for fans like myself.
The individual Marvel game could have taken a completely distinct form, however. As shared in a recent report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, it was Carrie Patel, the game’s director, who disclosed that Avowed initially began as an MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) game, often referred to as ‘multiplayer Skyrim’.
What Might Have Been
Considering how crowded the Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) market has become nowadays, I’m genuinely appreciative that Avowed decided to take on a new shape after undergoing a significant overhaul.
According to Carrie Patel’s recent statement in a Bloomberg report, Avowed underwent a significant transformation in 2021 due to a change in direction. Initially designed as a multiplayer game, the shift led to a complete overhaul of Avowed’s production plan. The game was on the verge of entering full-scale development, but Microsoft’s acquisition of Obsidian necessitated some major changes, resulting in a larger team being tasked with revamping the project.

Typically, when you’re reassessing your creative approach, creating a fresh prototype and updating your project blueprint, this process is usually done with a limited number of people involved.
We did not have a very small team at that point.
In an ideal world, we would have acquired many valuable insights while developing this game through a mini-scale production phase, also known as pre-production, instead of learning them during the main build process.
In a surprising change, the open-world design initially planned for Avowed was replaced with a ‘zone-based’ structure, similar to The Outer Worlds from 2019. This shift in approach has been openly discussed by the Avowed development team, who have shared their rationale behind this creative and practical choice.
At the end of the interview with Schreier, Patel concluded by hinting towards the future prospects of the Avowed brand.
After constructing such an amazing universe, and establishing a strong bond within our team through familiarity with its content and mechanics, it would be delightful to further explore and expand its potential.
