The upcoming film, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” is expected to take elements from both the Marvel Comics storylines of the 1980s and the 2010s as its creative foundation.
The Russo Brothers, known as Joe and Anthony Russo, are currently developing two upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Avengers films for Marvel Studios: “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” The first film, “Avengers: Doomsday,” is slated for release in 2026, while “Avengers: Secret Wars” is expected to follow approximately a year later, hitting theaters in 2027.
At present, specific storylines for both films are still kept confidential; nevertheless, it’s worth noting that “Secret Wars” is a title previously used in Marvel Comics.
Initially, Secret Wars was a 12-issue comic book series that spanned from 1984 to 1985. Created by Jim Shooter, Mike Zeck, and Bob Layton, this epic storyline takes place on Battleworld, a planet where Marvel characters find themselves in an arena, forced to battle each other, both heroes and villains alike.
Subsequently, in 2015, Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić devised a fresh take on Secret Wars for Marvel Comics. This series presents a novel Battleworld planet, which Doctor Doom assumes command over, following an incursion event.
What did the Russo Brothers say about Avengers: Secret Wars?
Initially, it was believed that the movie “Avengers: Secret Wars” would primarily follow the storyline of the 2010s series rather than the 1980s crossover. However, as revealed by the Russo Brothers to TechRadar, they intend to draw inspiration from both sets of events for the creation of this film.
Joe explained that when it comes to our storytelling, we tend to develop our unique take on things. We use the comics as a general guide, but the original run holds a special place for me, being what initially drew me to Marvel comic books. The Hickman run is equally impressive and distinct from the original in many aspects, so we plan to incorporate elements from both.
Marvel Studios is set to unveil “Avengers: Doomsday” on May 1st, 2026, with the sequel “Avengers: Secret Wars” following suit on May 7th, 2027.
