Marvel Studios often keeps its actors unaware of specific plotlines and character demises. For instance, actor Ross Marquand, who took over the role of Red Skull from Hugo Weaving in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, didn’t find out he was part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films until just before he started shooting his scenes.
In the realm of gaming, I’ve been fortunate enough to work with Marvel Studios after the epic conclusion of Endgame. Lending my voice to Ultron and his sentries in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and What If…? was a thrilling experience. Not to mention, stepping into Professor X’s shoes for X-Men ’97 was an honor I won’t forget. On top of that, I’ve made appearances on camera, particularly in the last seven seasons of AMC’s The Walking Dead as Aaron. It’s been one heck of a ride!
At Awesome Con 2025 (reported by ComicBook.com), Marquand disclosed the surprising news of his role as Red Skull in Infinity War and Endgame. He explained that, initially, he was informed that he would be attempting to mimic a character previously voiced by Hugo Weaving.
When did Ross Marquand find out he was playing Red Skull?
As a gamer speaking, here’s my take: “I had no clue about the game I was going to voice act for. They never mentioned it. All they said was that it was a voice-matching gig which might involve replicating a character previously voiced by Hugo Weaving, but they didn’t even reveal its name. It wasn’t until I reached the set that they made me shave and put on those motion capture dots. I look around, and there are about 150 people waiting for me. I thought, ‘This isn’t just a regular voiceover job, something’s off.’ That’s when the makeup artist whispered in my ear, ‘Do you know what you’re working on? This is the new Avengers game.’ I nearly fainted.
As a gamer, I can tell you that the Red Skull scenes by Marquand were some epic moments captured towards the end of both Avengers film productions. The actor shared, “It was an insane day on set, as it was one of the final days for both films. They were shooting both movies simultaneously and a significant portion of Hollywood is in these productions. So whenever they needed me, that’s when I was called in, filmed, and then sent on my way.
Sadly, Marquand missed out on acting alongside Josh Brolin (Thanos), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) – the quartet whose characters cross paths with Red Skull during their quest to obtain the Soul Stone. Notably, Brolin and Saldana had already filmed for Infinity War half a year prior, while Johansson and Renner completed their parts for Endgame three months before this opportunity came up.
In my work, I had the pleasure of collaborating with two exceptionally charming stand-ins. They would provide me with the necessary eyelines and dialogue for me to respond to. This method of filming was quite intriguing, let me assure you.
Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe can relive Hugo Weaving’s portrayal of the Red Skull by streaming Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame on Disney Plus.
