In a surprising turn of events, Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” has surpassed the box office earnings of “Avengers: Endgame” and outperformed the projected take for “Thunderbolts“, both domestically and internationally, according to its Monday box office figures. Released in theaters on May 23, 2025, this live-action remake of the classic animated film has been a blockbuster hit. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, “Lilo & Stitch” is now among Disney’s most successful live-action adaptations.
Lilo & Stitch now has the fourth-best Monday box office ever
On its opening Monday, Lilo & Stitch shattered Avengers: Endgame’s box office record and secured a place among the top 4 highest-grossing Mondays ever domestically, according to Disney reports. Specifically, on May 26th, Lilo & Stitch raked in an impressive $37 million at the box office.
The depicted film has surpassed Avengers: Endgame’s initial Monday earnings from 2019 (amounting to $36.9 million). Besides Lilo & Stitch, only a few other films have managed to secure spots among the top 4 highest-grossing opening Mondays in history.
- Black Panther (2018) – $40.15 million
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) – $40.1 million
- Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) – $37.1 million
Furthermore, Lilo & Stitch surpassed Top Gun: Maverick to become the film that earned the most during Memorial Day weekend, with a staggering $182.6 million. Conversely, Top Gun: Maverick garnered around $160.5 million in its opening.
Lilo & Stitch goes past Thunderbolts*’ box office
Besides setting a record during Memorial Day weekend, just a few days after its premiere, Lilo & Stitch managed to exceed the total earnings that Thunderbolts had accumulated throughout its entire lifetime.
Based on an article from The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been revealed that the live-action version of the movie has surpassed $400 million at the box office within merely five days. As of now, the earnings for Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* stand at approximately $358 million.
In a statement regarding Lilo & Stitch’s ongoing popularity, Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman expressed that the affection for these characters persists and intensifies. The objective of this fresh retelling was to enable viewers to revisit their favorite characters on the big screen once more, hopefully sparking the same amount of enjoyment as we experienced during production. We are immensely proud of this groundbreaking debut, and I’d like to extend my gratitude to our hardworking teams and to the fans whose support made this impressive opening achievable.
