After more than six years since Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, led the Avengers in their final battle against Thanos in “Endgame”, it appears that Marvel Studios is preparing a new leader to steer the upcoming team of Avengers. Instead of Sam Wilson’s version of Captain America, it seems like one of the latest characters introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will take on this role.
Who is the Avengers’ new leader?
In a recent conversation with Variety, director Matt Shakman of The Fantastic Four: First Steps revealed that Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic will take on the role of the Avengers’ new commander in the forthcoming Doomsday and Secret Wars films. Shakman further disclosed that casting Mister Fantastic was the most difficult choice he had to make, given the character’s immense importance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future.
Reed’s character was the hardest one to find an actor for. As he transitions from a shy scientist confined in a lab, to a devoted husband and protective father, and eventually the leader of the Avengers, it became clear that the portrayal we were creating needed to encompass all these aspects,” he shared.

The upcoming film titled “Avengers: Doomsday” is being helmed by the same directors as “Avengers: Endgame”, Joe and Anthony Russo. They’re working from a script penned by Stephen McFeely. Notably, Robert Downey Jr., an Academy Award winner, will reprise his role as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom. The impressive cast also includes Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Letitia Wright, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, and Danny Ramirez.
In the upcoming sixth part, we can expect the comeback of Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen reprising his role as Magneto, Alan Cumming playing Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn back as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops, and Channing Tatum in his role as Gambit. However, Kevin Feige hinted that the full cast has not been unveiled yet, suggesting there might be more exciting casting announcements coming soon.
Right now, the scheduled release date for Avengers: Doomsday remains as December 18, 2026, in cinemas. After that, Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to hit the screens on December 17, 2027.
