Joe and the Russo brothers, most recently, have commented on the swirling rumors concerning Moon Knight and other Marvel characters from Disney+ in potential future films such as Avengers: End of All Things and Avengers: Secret Battleground. While Anthony Russo didn’t explicitly name any characters, he emphasized their expansive strategy for Marvel Cinematic Universe narratives. This has sparked excitement about the possible reappearance of familiar faces, as well as speculation regarding Robert Downey Jr.’s potential transformation into Doctor Doom.
Anthony Russo talks Marvel TV heroes’ return in Avengers: Doomsday
In an interview with TechRadar, the Russo Brothers hinted at the prospect of Moon Knight and other Disney+ Marvel characters making appearances in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Anthony Russo mentioned that their storytelling encompasses the entire MCU, leaving room for interpretation about potential character crossovers within this universe.
For the films Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, Robert Downey Jr. is the only officially confirmed cast member so far. He will be portraying Doctor Doom in these movies. Prior to this role, Downey Jr. played Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from 2008 until 2019. The announcement of Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom came at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024, following the dismissal of Jonathan Majors who was initially set to play the villain as Kang the Conqueror.
Joe Russo shared with TechRadar that their upcoming project takes influence from both Jim Shooter’s Secret Wars (1984) and Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars (2015). He explained, “We adapt the story to fit our unique vision. So, we use these comics as general guides.” He also mentioned, “I was captivated by the original series, which ignited my love for Marvel comic books. The Hickman series is equally impressive and quite distinct from the first one, so we’ll borrow elements from both of them.
It’s rumored that Chris Evans could be back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s not yet clear what part he might play. Marvel Studios is planning to launch Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 and then Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
