In a fresh unveiling, we get our first glimpse of the antagonist in the upcoming film “Avatar: Fire and Ash“, named “Varang“. Played by Oona Chaplin, this role is part of the directorial efforts of James Cameron on “Avatar 3“, a sequel to the 2022 movie “Avatar: Way of Water”. The forthcoming film “Fire and Ash” will be followed by parts four and five in the series.

On X (previously known as Twitter), the account for movies announced, “Get acquainted with Varang in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Catch the exclusive trailer of it in theaters this weekend, alongside The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
So, the trailer for Fire and Ash will be linked with the Marvel Studios film that’s set to premiere on July 25. The third installment of the Avatar series is slated for theater release on December 19, 2025. Additionally, we can anticipate the arrivals of Avatar 4 and 5 in 2029 and 2031 respectively.
In Avatar 3’s universe, the role of the fresh antagonist, Varang, is portrayed by Oona Chaplin. She commands the recently unveiled Ash clan that makes its debut in the world of Pandora.
During a chat with Empire in January 2025, Cameron expressed that Varang’s tribe had faced an extraordinarily difficult ordeal.
In addition, he noted that Varang is prepared to undertake actions, some of which might be perceived as “wicked,” all for the sake of her people. Cameron described Varang as a formidable adversary, characterized by a sense of authenticity and vitality, brought to life by Chaplin’s portrayal.
In simpler terms, Cameron also mentioned a shift from the previous movie’s pattern where only humans were portrayed as threats. He expressed their intention to progress past the “humans-are-bad, Na’vi-are-good” stereotype.
