According to James Cameron, the upcoming film titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” or what’s commonly referred to as “Avatar 3,” is expected to be slightly more extended in duration compared to “Avatar: The Way of Water.
At present, Cameron is engaged in creating the third installment of the Avatar movie series. As of now, it’s slated for release in December 2025, with Sam Worthington returning to portray Jake Sully once more.
What did James Cameron say about Avatar 3’s runtime?
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Cameron revealed that several concepts initially intended for Avatar 3 had instead been woven into Avatar: The Path of the Water.
Essentially, Cameron stated that there were an overwhelming number of excellent concepts crammed into the first act of movie 2. The pacing was fast as a speeding train, leaving insufficient focus on character development. Thus, he suggested, “Let’s divide it.”
He added, “Movie three will actually be a little bit longer than movie two.”

Cameron shared that creating Avatar: Fire and Ash was a deeply personal journey for him. He explained, “The characters in this movie are a blend of our own experiences, our childhood memories, our roles as parents, and even the mistakes we’ve made as parents. In many ways, Jake is a reflection of me – he can be quite strict with his children, and that’s something I identify with.
As a passionate gamer, let me tell you, that movie was nothing short of breathtaking! You see, I’ve spent countless hours pondering over the characters, and then, magically, they came to life before my very eyes. It was as if they had their own breath, their own existence. This game is not just about a fast-paced plot or stunning visuals; it’s about real characters who feel alive and relatable.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled to be released on December 19, 2025, from 20th Century Studios.
