Aubrey Plaza has issued a statement regarding the passing of her husband Jeff Baena.
On the 3rd of January, 2025, Jeff Baena took his own life at the age of 47. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office has confirmed the cause of death to be suicide. Plaza and the Baena/Stern family have now released an official statement about Jeff’s passing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Baena is survived by his wife Plaza, his mother Barbara Stern and her husband Roger Stern, his biological father Scott Baena and his wife Michele Baena, his brother Brad Baena, his stepsister Bianca Gabay, and his stepbrother Jed Fluxman. Baena and Plaza tied the knot in 2021.
In 2004, Jesse Armstrong penned the script for “I Heart Huckabees,” a movie featuring Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, and David O. Russell in prominent roles. Additionally, he contributed unacknowledged writing to the 2004 sequel of “Meet the Parents,” titled “Meet the Fockers,” which brought together Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro on screen.
In 2014, Baena first took the helm as a film director for Life After Beth, a movie that featured Aubrey Plaza alongside Dane DeHaan, John C. Reilly, and Molly Shannon. Following this, he directed Joshy in 2016, which was exhibited in the U.S. Dramatic Competition section of the Sundance Film Festival and starred Thomas Middleditch. His next project was The Little Hours in 2017, a medieval dark comedy that boasted Alison Brie and Dave Franco. Notably, Aubrey Plaza also appeared in both Joshy and The Little Hours.
Afterward, Baena directed Horse Girl in 2020, featuring Brie once more. Subsequently, he collaborated with Brie on co-writing Spin Me Round in 2022. In this film, Brie portrayed the main character Amber, and Alessandro Nivola played her co-star. Meanwhile, Plaza appeared as a supporting character named Kat.
