Atomic Blonde 2: Charlize Theron Sequel Gets Disappointing Update From Director

As a devoted fan who’s been eagerly awaiting the return of our beloved Lorraine Broughton since the original Atomic Blonde graced our screens back in 2017, I can’t help but feel a tad frustrated by the delays in bringing us Atomic Blonde 2. I mean, who doesn’t love a good spy-fi action flick with Charlize Theron kicking butt and taking names?

The planning for Atomic Blonde 2 commenced a short while following the release of the original film starring Charlize Theron in 2017. Yet, as of now, production on the sequel remains unfathomed, and director David Leitch has shed light on the reasons behind the delay.

David Leitch, who was behind the first John Wick film, has also helmed Atomic Blonde and taken part in its sequel. This action-packed movie, made on a budget of approximately $30 million, proved to be a financial hit by earning more than $100 million worldwide. However, the release of its sequel has been delayed due to complications with rights.

As a devoted fan, I’m excited about the news that Netflix acquired the rights for Atomic Blonde 2 in 2020, making it a Netflix original film. However, during an interview with The Direct at the John Wick’s 10th-anniversary celebration event, director David Leitch shared some insights into the challenges behind the scenes that have delayed the sequel.

The director explained, “We’re all grappling with rights matters right now, and the project has been passed from Universal to Netflix temporarily. It’s currently facing a logjam of conflicting interests trying to bring it to life because it’s such an exceptional piece of intellectual property and revisiting that world and character would be fantastic. Fingers crossed we can make it happen…

Earlier remarks by Kurt Johnstad, the writer of Atomic Blonde, hinted at the possibility of a trilogy. This implies that followers might be treated to at least one sequel within the Atomic Blonde narrative, with the possibility of additional installments as well.

In November 1989, the movie featured Charlize Theron as Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 agent working undercover. The film concluded with several mysteries unresolved, one of which was about Broughton’s true allegiance. When Atomic Blonde 2 is released, it might provide answers regarding her loyalty and potentially place Theron’s character against a new adversary.
