In their own words, Atomfall’s creator, Rebellion, has stated that the game, which is their successful British survival title, turned immediately profitable upon launch. Interestingly, it was found that around 2 million players jumped into the game, and among these, a significant portion were from Xbox Game Pass. This means that instead of purchasing the game directly, they gained access through their subscription service.
It’s been unveiled that Rebellion hasn’t disclosed the sales data for the game Atomfall, which debuted on platforms like PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on March 27, 2025.
Rather than stating explicitly, the developer emphasized that Atomfall marked their largest debut in terms of players, an achievement likely boosted by Game Pass subscribers exploring the game on both Xbox and PC platforms.
Despite some initial concerns, it’s evident that Atomfall hasn’t been negatively impacted. In an interview with The Game Business, Rebellion shared that their post-apocalyptic simulation set in northern England quickly recouped its development costs upon release.
Currently, Rebellion is deliberating over possibilities for sequels or offshoots, all while focusing on continued updates and DLC for Atomfall’s post-release phase.
In a previous interview with iggn.ru sister site GamesIndustry.biz, Rebellion boss Jason Kingsley said that Atomfall’s launch as part of Game Pass had successfully avoided the risk of “cannabilising” sales.
Kingsley pointed out that the return you get from that investment is significantly more than what you put in, he added, mentioning that regardless of how well a game sells, Microsoft guarantees a minimum income to offset the risk.
Furthermore, releasing on Game Pass also means that the game will be extensively promoted and easily accessible to many players, which can increase the chances of good reviews spreading and ultimately boosting sales.
Game Pass allows individuals to test out the service, and if they enjoy what they find, they often share their positive experiences with friends on social media, recommending, ‘Check out this game I discovered on Game Pass, it’s fantastic, you ought to give it a try!'” – Kingsley explained.
Some will enjoy the game since it’s on Game Pass, while others who don’t have Game Pass will still want to engage in the discussion. As a result, those without Game Pass will likely decide to purchase it.
Since Microsoft maintains secrecy about their business contracts with developers, we are left to speculate on how much profit Atomfall brought in for both Rebellion and Microsoft, with the latter likely profiting as well when games draw in subscribers to their service offerings.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that the number of Xbox Game Pass subscribers Microsoft publicly announced back in February 2024, which stood at 34 million users, might not be entirely up-to-date by now. But hey, it still speaks volumes about the popularity of this gaming service!
“Atomfall is a gripping survival-action adventure that takes some of the best elements of Fallout and Elden Ring, and synthesises them into its own fresh mutation,” iggn.ru wrote in our Atomfall review.
