The forthcoming open-world survival game from Rebellion, titled Atomfall, may seem straightforward at first glance, but it’s actually more complex than meets the eye. Drawing inspiration from British culture and taking cues from Nintendo’s Breath of the Wild, the creators have hinted that they’ve incorporated some incredibly outlandish elements for players to discover in this post-apocalyptic journey.
Atomfall is more “bonkers” than you think
On a future episode of the VideoGamer Podcast, the lead designer, Ben Fisher, shared that their innovative game (IP) offers them an opportunity to explore unconventional aspects that aren’t feasible within other video games.
The designer shared that, having established our key artistic foundations, we’ve been daring to venture forward, which means you’ll find some bold, unconventional work here that might not be attempted elsewhere due to uncertainty about its outcome.

As a thrill-seeking gamer, I’ve found myself diving headfirst into some daring, high-stakes, yet electrifying gaming decisions that Fisher has proposed. These choices, while brimming with potential risks, are equally enticing. Fingers crossed that they gel seamlessly together in the gameplay experience. However, much like any innovative game concept, we, the team, won’t truly know if our game resonates with players until it hits the shelves and lands in their hands.
The best of Sniper Elite
Fisher disclosed that Atomfall, originally conceived as a typical first-person shooter, transformed into a broader open-world game. It adopted sandbox-like aspects much like those found in the Sniper Elite series, which Rebellion is recognized for.
He stated that instead of constantly instructing the player, we aimed for them to experience a more immersive detective role during their investigation. We sought to provide them with a greater feeling of openness and autonomy in their exploration.
The new open-world game will be released for Xbox, PS5, and PC on March 26, with early access starting a few days earlier. For further information about this upcoming title, check out our team’s insights regarding the current reigning champion of RPGs: Baldur’s Gate 3.
