Atari is set to revive its iconic Breakout series with a fresh installment called Breakout Beyond. This upcoming game maintains the essence of the original Breakout, where you bounce a ball off paddles to break bricks, but introduces sideways gameplay, enhanced progression mechanics, and additional features to deliver a refreshing take on the classic experience.
This week, Atari unveiled a new version of Breakout called Breakout Beyond. Just like the original game, you’ll bounce a ball off your movable paddle to knock down bricks that serve as obstacles in the game. But here’s the twist: instead of playing from top-to-bottom, the game is set sideways. As you break through sections of bricks, your paddle will automatically move forward, propelling towards a goal that clears the entire level. Additionally, it appears that this version will include colorful explosive effects, multiple balls in play at once (multiball), and special power-ups with unique twists.
Breakout Beyond continues the trend of modernized versions of classic games that Atari has been working on recently, such as Missile Command: Recharged, Berzerk: Recharged, and Yars Rising, among others. Given that Breakout is already known for its engaging and addictive gameplay, the modifications made by Atari to this revival are expected to further emphasize these appealing aspects.
The launch date for Breakout Beyond is still unknown, but it’s set to arrive on Atari VCS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, and PC systems. You can add it to your wishlist on several of these platforms already. Keep an eye out for further announcements as they become available.
