Andy Bryon resigns as CEO after Coldplay drama
Andy Byron stepped down as CEO of Astronomer, following a surge of attention online after a video from a Coldplay concert became viral. On July 19th, Astronomer officially announced on X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn that Byron had submitted his resignation, which the board accepted.
Andy Byron has stepped down from his position, and this decision has been approved by the Board of Directors,” the company announced. They further explained, “As we’ve emphasized before, Astronomer upholds the principles and spirit that have defined us since our inception. Our executives are expected to embody these values through their actions and accountability, but unfortunately, this standard was not maintained recently.
In the same statement, an Astronomer announced that Pete DeJoy, co-founder and Chief Product Officer, will temporarily take over as CEO. Simultaneously, the board is planning to find a replacement for the former CEO. The company emphasized that although their public image might have shifted suddenly, their product quality and customer service remain unchanged. They continue to focus on what they excel at: assisting customers in solving complex data and AI challenges.
The video was captured during Coldplay’s concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts on July 16. It depicted a man and woman who abruptly separated after being featured on the venue’s “Kiss Cam.” Chris Martin of Coldplay commented on the incident from the stage, joking, “Looks like they’re either secretly in love or extremely bashful.” The video soon spread virally online.
According to a report by The New York Times on July 18, astronomers identified the people in the video as Byron and the company’s HR head. Subsequently, the company disclosed that Byron had been temporarily suspended and that they were conducting an internal probe following this discovery.
