The Tamil crime thriller titled Asthram made its cinema premiere on March 21, 2025. Newcomer Aravind Rajagopal took the helm as director for this film that received a mixture of positive and negative feedback at the box office but managed to maintain a steady presence in theaters. If you haven’t caught the movie starring Shaam yet, fear not — it’s slated to be released digitally shortly.

In the storyline, Detective Asthram trails Inspector Akilan (Shaam), who’s temporarily off duty because of a hand injury. Surprisingly, he delves into an intriguing string of public suicides involving self-stabbings. Joining forces with novice officer Sumanth, they hunt for connections between these cases. Their probe uncovers the fact that each victim was an avid chess player. They also stumble upon a peculiar book called “Chess — The Secret,” which hints at ancient Japanese ritual suicide traditions associated with chess.

In the midst of an ongoing string of suicides, Akilan discovers links among psychiatrist Rudhran, affluent entrepreneur James, and their son Martin. A significant past event, recounted by Rudhran in a flashback, sheds light on the case’s critical aspects. The probe suggests that the victims might have been hypnotized to take their own lives. Concurrently, we glimpse into Akilan’s personal life through his conversations with his spouse, Nira, who is a media expert. Now, let’s see what unfolds next.
