As a seasoned gamer with countless hours logged into various titles under my belt, I’ve seen developers face their fair share of challenges. The latest news about Ubisoft and their games, Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has certainly piqued my interest.
For the French publishing company, November typically signifies a time for reviewing financial data. Ubisoft recently reassessed their sales statistics and acknowledged that the game “Star Wars Outlaws” did not meet expectations, leading to certain repercussions.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows as a last chance?
As we delve into the midyear assessment for the 2024-25 financial period, Yves Guillemot, one of our founders and CEO, expresses his thoughts.
[…] We are improving the quality of Star Wars Outlaws, including actively addressing player feedback through title updates as we get ready for the Steam launch, the first story pack, and the upcoming holiday season.
Additionally, they acknowledge the common perception: Star Wars Outlaws has fallen short of expectations, and it has done so significantly. Now, Ubisoft openly acknowledges this fact.
This quarter saw the release of Star Wars Outlaws™, which underperformed sales expectations.
However, another theory that’s also been verified is at play here as well. Many have speculated about why Assassin’s Creed Shadows was delayed. Was it because they didn’t manage to complete it in time? Or perhaps they wanted a break from releasing another big-budget game following the negative attention Outlaws generated? Ubisoft has also addressed this question, offering an explanation:
We are also taking the additional time to ensure that the upcoming very ambitious opus in our flagship franchise, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, is a highly polished, exceptional experience on day one and that it resonates strongly with players.
The game currently includes all its functionalities, but the development team is cautious about releasing it without first ensuring there are no glitches or errors.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows will now be released on 14 February 2025. While the game is feature complete, the learnings from the Star Wars Outlaws release led us to provide additional time to further polish the title.
It seems that Ubisoft is leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to ensure the success of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” given that it’s their most prominent series.
