Is it possible that Assassin’s Creed Shadows could enhance Ubisoft’s standing once more, given the game is receiving numerous accolades and attracting massive numbers of players… yet still facing a considerable amount of critique?
Assassin’s Creed Shadows: A New Ubisoft Hit(?)
In a brief period, “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” has made an impressive debut and could potentially be the most successful game within the franchise. This is because it has already amassed over 1 million players in the initial 24 hours following its release.
According to the official X account of the franchise, Shadows has already outperformed both Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey.
2 million players have joined our exciting adventure in Feudal Japan, making Assassin’s Creed Shadows a resounding success! This game has surpassed the initial launches of AC Origins and Odyssey. We are grateful for your participation in this journey with us. #AssassinsCreedShadows

To put it simply, Shadows has surpassed the player record set by Odyssey six years ago. At the time this article was written, Shadows had a peak of 64,825 players, making it more popular than its predecessor.
In essence, at the moment of publishing this article, Shadows boasted a record-breaking player peak of 64,825, surpassing Odyssey’s player count of 62,069 which was set six years prior.
It’s particularly noteworthy given that the game had faced disputes even prior to its launch, such as Japan’s censorship of the game and backlash from certain circles who oppose diversity, specifically the black protagonist.
On Steam as well, the game “Shadows” is doing quite well: At present, it boasts a “very positive” rating with an impressive 81% of its reviewers endorsing it. However, there are also some significant drawbacks that deserve attention.
The Shadowy Side of Shadows
Although many players generally praise the game, a large number of top-rated reviews are unfavorable and contain significant criticisms. If Ubisoft aims to exceed an 81% positive review rate once more, they should seriously consider these complaints. Here’s what some dissatisfied customers have to share:
It’s a pretty looking game with no substance inside of it. I will probably play some more of it just to kill some time whilst watching/listening to something in the background. The fact that i have relegated a “single player story driven game” to “guess i will listen to a podcast on the side” should speak volumes of my opinion of the game, how repetitive it is, and how boring the writing is. – mic13710 on Steam
Locked me out of my Ubi connect account and asked me to make a case for customer support. Proceeds to ignore my case for the rest of the day thus preventing me from accessing the full priced game I own. Oh and every second you spend trying to connect on Ubi Connect is counted as your in-game playtime for the video game you HAVEN’T EVEN LAUNCHED YET. I had 67 mins of playtime before I could even start the game. – The Big Moz on Steam
Micro transactions in a single-player game with 70 Dollar price tag, why? – return false; on Steam
1. Poor narrative structure and voice acting performance
2. Frequent connection problems due to the requirement of linking your gameplay to a Ubisoft account
3. The practice of charging actual money for items and services within a game that’s inherently costly.
To avoid repeating the mistakes of 2024, Ubisoft might want to scale back their greed and focus more on investing time and energy into creating high-quality games.
