Fans are expressing worry over Ashlyn Watkins from South Carolina, who was hurt during the Gamecocks’ match against Mississippi State. As a junior forward, she had to leave the game in the second quarter after making a layup attempt and didn’t come back. This has led to speculation about her recovery process and when she might be back on the court.
Wondering about Ashlyn Watkins’ injury during the recent game? Here are all the available details.
What happened to Ashlyn Watkins?
During a layup attempt in the second quarter of Saturday’s game against Mississippi State, South Carolina women’s basketball player Ashlyn Watkins got injured and had to leave the court. Watkins, an important substitute, appeared to be in pain after falling to the ground and needed help from trainers to get back up. She was escorted off the court and walked gingerly to the locker room, seeming to put little weight on her left leg. At that point in the game, the No. 2 ranked Gamecocks were behind the Bulldogs 24-15.
During the second half, Watkins didn’t reappear on the bench, and later, South Carolina officially announced through their social media (previously Twitter) that she wouldn’t play for the remainder of the game. At the post-match press conference, coach Dawn Staley mentioned there was no current update regarding Watkins’ health status. She clarified that Watkins had received on-site treatment but hadn’t been hospitalized, indicating the injury might not have been critically serious initially. Yet, an official report about her condition is yet to be released.
This season, Watkins has been crucial for the Gamecocks’ performance. On average, she contributes 7.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game. Losing her in a match is a considerable setback for the team. The Gamecocks are set to face Texas A&M on Thursday, but it’s unclear if Watkins will be participating due to her current status.
