Lately, the Malayalam film industry has been under close examination following revelations by the Hema Committee concerning numerous instances of sexual harassment and other inappropriate events experienced by many female workers within the industry. Notably, actress Usha has spoken out about experiencing inappropriate behavior from a senior actor, an incident that unfortunately negatively impacted her career.
According to a report by Manorama Online, Usha shared a distressing experience of a senior actor attempting inappropriate behavior towards her within an elevator. This incident took place during an event in Bahrain, where a number of other actors, such as Mohanlal, were present as well.
In the retelling of events, Usha mentioned that a performance had taken place in Bahrain. Following the show, we all were waiting to head to the airport. Everyone was quite exhausted. Mohanlal suggested that we gather our possessions and move to the hall so we could chat there. Monisha, Revathi, Sukumari, among others, were also present. I collected my luggage and entered the elevator, with Mohanlal also in the lift. He inquired if we were going down, and I cheerfully joined him in the elevator.
Progressing in her account, Usha explained that things grew uncomfortable as soon as the elevator door shut, trapping her alone with the actor within it. She stated, “Immediately upon closing, his behavior towards me became highly inappropriate. In response, I struck him. By then, the elevator had arrived at the next level.”
In light of the unsettling incident, I found myself compelled to seek out Mohanlal’s help. Having been left puzzled and distressed by the senior actor’s actions towards me, I decided to report the whole ordeal to him.
Indeed, Usha disclosed that another actress, Sukumari, had also become privy to her unfortunate incident. Similar to Mohanlal, Sukumari acknowledged that her actions were inappropriate as well.
As a die-hard fan, I found myself in an elevator with the legendary actress Sukumari, and I couldn’t help but ask her about the commotion I’d just witnessed. I filled her in on what had transpired, promising to spread the word. Moments later, the one and only Lalettan (Mohanlal) appeared, curious about the incident. I shared every detail with him, too. To my surprise, both Lalettan and Sukumari consoled me and affirmed that my response was fitting. That’s when the troubles began, as the actress continued her narrative.
Following her comments about the senior actor to Mohanlal and others, Usha Haneef observed that her job prospects gradually decreased. She even pointed out that individuals in the industry started labeling her as arrogant, a performer quick to accuse prominent stars. Consequently, she ceased receiving any film offers altogether.
To clarify for those unfamiliar with the situation, following a wave of accusations about various forms of mistreatment towards women in the Malayalam film industry, Mohanlal stunned everyone by declaring his resignation as President of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists).
