Information on the Armor Wars project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been scarce lately, but actor Sam Rockwell hinted at a potential parallel between his Iron Man 2 character, Justin Hammer, and the DC Comics villain Lex Luthor. In a recent conversation, the Oscar-winning performer expressed interest in reprising his role as Tony Stark’s business rival, discussing how Hammer could influence the ongoing storylines within the MCU.
Sam Rockwell discusses Justin Hammer’s possible return in Armor Wars
In his latest conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Rockwell discussed the possibility of Justin Hammer appearing in the delayed Armor Wars project. Although Rockwell didn’t offer a clear update about it, he suggested some potential directions Marvel might take if Hammer were to reappear in the storyline.
In response to being queried about potential discussions for his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Rockwell replied, “Absolutely, there were conversations about a series, but I find the idea of a movie quite thrilling.” He also pointed out similarities between Hammer and DC’s Lex Luthor, specifically referencing Gene Hackman’s portrayal in the Superman films, saying, “I can’t really see what he brings to the table. Essentially, he’s like Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor.
Despite Rockwell not yet verifying whether Justin Hammer would reappear in the MCU for the Armor Wars project, he did explain what the character could offer if he returned. “He’s primarily a comedic element,” explained the 56-year-old actor. “Even though he was imprisoned, it might get unusual.
Sam Rockwell made a single appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2010’s Iron Man 2. At the end of the film, his character, Justin Hammer, was apprehended for assisting the villain, Whiplash. Ever since then, Rockwell has expressed interest in reprising his role, specifically for the Armor Wars storyline. However, it seems that there have been no recent developments on this potential project, leaving fans to wonder if Marvel Studios might have scrapped Armor Wars entirely.
