As a long-time fan of musical adaptations and someone who has been disheartened by pay disparities in Hollywood for far too long, I am genuinely relieved to hear that Universal has debunked the rumors about Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s pay for their work on Wicked. It is a breath of fresh air to see equal pay being upheld, especially for two talented actresses who bring such depth and nuance to their respective roles in this highly anticipated film.
It’s been contested that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo received significantly varying amounts in compensation for their roles in the popular stage adaptation of Wicked.
What did Universal say about the pay disparity rumor?
A Universal representative recently told The Hollywood Reporter that there’s no truth to the claims about a significant wage gap between them, as these allegations lack evidence to support their validity.
The rumors about a pay gap between Cynthia and Ariana, regarding their work on Wicked, are entirely unfounded and stem from online speculation. In reality, they both received the same compensation for their roles,” the representative stated.
Gossips started circulating on platforms like TikTok and Reddit, suggesting that Grande received a massive $15 million for her role in the movie, while Erivo was compensated only $1 million. However, this story lacked substantial proof and yet, it rapidly gained traction across multiple posts and media outlets.
In simple terms, the “Wicked” films are helmed by director Jon M. Chu, who adapted the script from the original work of Winnie Holzman (the book writer for the musical). The story is inspired by Gregory Maguire’s top-selling novel and the award-winning stage production that won a Tony.
In this movie, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo star in key roles as Galinda Upland and Elphaba Thropp respectively. Joining them are Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, Peter Dinklage as Doctor Dillamond, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, Ethan Slater as Boq, along with others.
As a gamer immersed in the magical realm of Oz, I’d put it like this: “I find myself drawn into an untold tale of two witches – Elphaba, a misunderstood green-skinned girl with powers she hasn’t even begun to tap yet, and Glinda, a seemingly perfect blonde who’s yet to uncover the depths of her heart. Their paths cross at Shiz University in this fantastical land, forming an unexpected bond that deepens as they navigate through their unique challenges.
Wicked: Part One is out now in theaters. The sequel, Wicked: Part Two, is currently set for November 21, 2025.
