As a dedicated gamer, I showed up to the DCU’s Superman screening dressed as Homelander from The Boys. To my surprise, Antony Starr, who plays Homelander, took notice! The Boys challenges traditional superhero narratives by portraying superhumans as morally questionable, self-centered, and even psychopathic at times. My character, John/Homelander, is often seen as a dark reinterpretation of Superman.

A clip that’s been widely shared on the internet features an enthusiastic spectator at a movie theater showing of James Gunn’s Superman, sporting the classic blue attire with red and white striped cape. The intriguing detail is that this fan carried a milk bottle, hinting at a quirk reminiscent of the character Homelander.

In response to this, Starr decided to express appreciation towards the fan via social media. The actor then posted the video on his Instagram Stories, accompanied by a caption that says, “This is something everyone should strive for. More individuals should engage in friendly cosplay rivalry. It’s a cool move.
In my gaming world, it seems like I didn’t share that video, but somehow, it managed to capture a massive crowd. Even the actor embodying the character I cosplayed in that clip must have seen it spread across the gaming universe.
Eric Kripke, who created “The Boys”, based the series on the same-titled comic book series penned by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Darick Robertson. In these original works, Homelander exhibits a combination of self-absorption and lack of compassion.
It’s worth noting that while working at DC Comics, Ennis presented a more reverential take on Superman during his time on the Hitman series. Significantly, Ennis and artist John McCrea jointly developed the character of Hitman, also known as Tommy Monagha.
The Amazon Prime Video series “The Boys” first aired on July 26, 2019. Subsequent seasons (Seasons 2 to 4) were released on September 4, 2020; June 3, 2022; and June 13, 2024. The fifth and concluding season of the show is set to premiere in 2026.
In reference to Superman, David Corenswet takes on the role of the legendary superhero. The film is set to debut today, specifically July 11th, across US cinemas.
