Antonio Banderas has joined the cast of A24’s Anthony Bourdain biopic movie, titled Tony.
Matt Johnson, who’s famous for helming the 2023 film BlackBerry, is currently developing a biographical film about Anthony Bourdain for the studio A24. It’s anticipated that filming for this project will start in the coming month.
Per Variety, Banderas has signed on to play an undisclosed role in the film.
Now, it’s officially announced that Dominic Sessa from The Holdover has been cast as Bourdain in the upcoming movie. Previously, it was rumored that discussions were underway for the role last summer; however, updates on the project have been scarce since then.
What do we know about the Anthony Bourdain movie?
The film is set in 1976, as described by Variety, where a young Anthony Bourdain undergoes a transformative event while working and residing in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
No other casting has been announced at this time.
As a gamer, I’d say: “I’m part of a game that’s scripted by the dynamic duo, Todd Bartels and Lou Howe. The film production is backed jointly by A24, Star Thrower, and Zapruder Films. Kimberly Witherspoon, Chris Stinson, Amy Greene, Howe, Bartels, and Emily Rose are all executive producers on this project.
Apart from BlackBerry, Johnson also directed “The Dirties” in 2013 and “Avalanche” in 2016. His upcoming movie, “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie,” is a time-travel mockumentary, which had its premiere at the 2025 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival. Distributor Neon has acquired the rights to this film and plans to release it in 2025; however, the specific date is still uncertain.
Recently, there’s talk that Johnson could be tapped as the director for a live-action Magic: The Gathering film by Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment, but it’s yet to be officially confirmed that he will take on the role.
