As the year 2024 draws to a close, there’s been plenty of chatter about the best games played throughout the year, with standout titles being highlighted. Even LocalThunk, the lone developer behind the popular indie game Balatro, has voiced his opinion. Interestingly, LocalThunk named another indie phenomenon, Animal Well, as his personal Game of the Year for 2024.
Last Friday on X, LocalThunk declared Animal Well as their Game of the Year in a post. They found it an immersive journey, teeming with style, mysteries, and making them feel like a novice in the development industry. In essence, Billy Basso crafted a genuine masterpiece according to them. Later, Basso reciprocated by naming LocalThunk as the “Kindest Most Modest Developer of the Year.
In future updates, LocalThunk will share a collection of alternative game titles he enthusiastically suggests. The lineup features Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers, a deck-building roguelike game that bears some resemblance to LocalThunk’s own project, though it was unveiled prior to Balatro. Other contenders on the list are Arco, Nova Drift, Ballionaire, and Mouthwashing.
In 2024, Balatro captivated the gaming world and received the title of Shacknews’ Game of the Year. Now, with the increased spotlight, LocalThunk anticipates that these mentions might draw more viewers to other outstanding indie games from the previous year.
