The old-school YouTube icon AVGN just announced his own 8-bit NES game.
James Rolfe, famously recognized as the “Irascible Gaming Pundit“, was among the pioneers in content creation, embarking on his creative path as far back as 2006. He revolutionized the concept of game reviews by presenting them in video format.
I, a notorious gaming enthusiast with a knack for colorful language, managed to draw in over 3.9 million followers with my content that took aim at classic video games. In my videos, you might have spotted some big names, like the one and only Macaulay Culkin, gracing the screen as special guests.
Despite his success, he was offered a role in the “Godzilla versus Kong” film, but ultimately chose not to take it.
Although Rolfe has appeared in some games previously, this marks his debut on an authentic NES game cartridge.
He’s gonna bring you back to the past…
On January 22, Rolfe posted on X (formerly Twitter) that a new AVGN game is in the making.

When I was a kid, I never imagined I’d be in an actual NES game on a real cartridge. You can play it on your NES or modern systems.
In a brief AVGN YouTube video, he demonstrates the game and comments: “Not only does it appear as an 8-bit game, but it genuinely is one designed for real NES systems. It certainly feels like stepping back in time.
Though the preview demonstrates gameplay on an actual NES system, keep in mind that AVGN 8-Bit will also be accessible on Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and both PlayStation 4 and 5 platforms.
As of now, we don’t have an official release date, but rest assured, if and when one becomes available, Rolfe will undoubtedly share it with us in a future AVGN episode.
