Angelina Jolie’s Maria Gets a 10-Minute Standing Ovation at Venice Film Festival

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for films that transport me into different worlds, I must admit, Angelina Jolie’s portrayal of Maria Callas in “Maria” has piqued my interest like never before. The 10-minute standing ovation at the Venice International Film Festival is a testament to its power and resonance.

As a devoted admirer, I had the immense pleasure of witnessing Angelina Jolie’s new biopic “Maria” make its grand debut on Thursday, August 29, at the prestigious 81st Venice International Film Festival. This remarkable film, which explores the life of the legendary American-born Greek soprano Maria Callas, left the audience in awe for a prolonged 10-minute standing ovation. In this captivating production, Angelina gracefully assumes the title role, portraying Maria with an unparalleled elegance and depth. Pablo Larraín, renowned for his works such as Neruda, Jackie, and Spencer, masterfully directed the movie from a script penned by Steven Knight, the brilliant mind behind Peaky Blinders.

Watch Angelina Jolie’s reaction to her Venice Film Festival standing ovation

At the Venice Film Festival this year, I was lucky enough to witness Maria’s movie premiere at the grand Sala Grande theater. The crowd erupted in a prolonged, 10-minute standing ovation for the film! Angelina Jolie was there, alongside her director, Larraín, and fellow stars Pierfrancesco Favino and Alba Rohrwacher. It seemed like everyone in the audience was deeply moved by the movie, even to the point of chanting Angie’s name in appreciation. What an unforgettable experience!

Jolie, too, appeared deeply moved during the applause, and she was caught on camera dabbing away tears before being comforted with a warm embrace from Favino.

Twice Oscar-nominated actress donned a Cartier panther brooch once owned by Callas for an afternoon photo session. Earlier in the day during a press conference, Jolie discussed her character’s portrayal. “There are many things I won’t disclose in this setting that you may already know or guess,” she stated. “I believe my connection to her was mostly the part of her that was incredibly tender and couldn’t find space in the world to be as gentle as she was, as emotionally exposed as she truly was… I identified more with her vulnerability than anything else.”

Furthermore, it was disclosed that Jolie had no previous singing experience but underwent vocal coaching for a duration of seven months. Larraín commended his leading lady by expressing that “the film would not have been made without Angelina.” (paraphrased from Deadline)

On Wednesday, 28th August, Netflix acquired the distribution rights for the movie, and they’ll be announcing its release date shortly.
