Diego Luna recently discussed the reasons for Andor wrapping up with Season 2 and shared his thoughts on the lasting impression of portraying Cassian Andor. At the Season 2 premiere of Andor in Los Angeles, Luna confirmed that his tenure as Cassian will come to an end with the upcoming season. In recent interviews, he also delved into the emotional and creative journey of the series, explaining how the rigorous production timeline influenced its finale.
Diego Luna on why Andor ends with Season 2
In an interview with Deadline, Diego Luna shared, “I bid farewell to this character when we finished shooting… I’m going to miss this family.” Luna initially played Cassian in 2016’s Rogue One, and the upcoming episodes trace the character’s path leading up to that movie. “It’s bittersweet, it hurts, but I also know how fortunate I am,” Luna expressed. “It spans over a decade of my life.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Luna expressed his feelings about his character’s role in the Star Wars saga: “Absolutely not… It allowed me to express a great deal of pain… Being part of this universe and this family has been very intense.
Regarding Cassian’s lasting impact, Luna expressed uncertainty, suggesting, “Perhaps that’s something for the viewers to decide.” As both an actor and producer, he also voiced his hope that other production companies might choose to grant similar creative liberties as they did.
He highly commended Disney and Lucasfilm’s creative backing, expressing that they were incredibly receptive to our ideas: “They gave us full rein to bring this vision to life.” Luna underscored the unwavering adherence to Tony Gilroy’s concept, stating, “The series Tony Gilroy initially proposed… is the one we’re presenting now. Such commitment would not have been possible without the creative liberty we were granted.
Luna elaborated on the reason for the show’s conclusion after two seasons, stating, “We spend approximately two and a half years working on each season of this production… so if we were to continue for five seasons, it would be unattainable.” He further added, “It’s best to part ways while everyone is still enjoying what they’re doing… it’s painful to let go, but it’s better to end things now rather than when we can no longer sustain it.
