Andor’s Ben Mendelsohn Jumped at the Chance to Reprise Rogue One Villain

In “Andor” Season 2, a figure hailing from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” makes an appearance, and that’s none other than Orson Krennic, portrayed by Ben Mendelsohn. Even though it’s been nine years since the release of “Rogue One” in 2016, Mendelsohn shares his reasons for eagerly embracing the opportunity to resurrect his sinister character.

Why did Ben Mendelsohn return for Andor?

According to a conversation Mendelsohn had with Variety, he shared that Tony Gilroy contacted him regarding reprising his role as Krennic in the second season. In response, Mendelsohn quickly agreed.

Mendelsohn mentioned, “It wasn’t too long after the initial season ended that Tony proposed the idea of returning for a few scenes. My response? A resounding ‘Yes, definitely!’ You see, Michael Clayton is among my top 25 favorite films ever made. The Star Wars experience and Krennic were both wonderful for me. I didn’t know how fantastic it would turn out, but it has exceeded all expectations, filling me with delightful surprise.

As a die-hard fan, I’d like to share some insights about Krennic’s character evolution across two iconic Star Wars stories. In Rogue One, he was the mastermind behind the Death Star’s construction as the head of advanced weapons research for the Empire. Fast forward to Andor, and we find him climbing the Imperial ranks, a fact that Thomas Newson (Krennic) himself emphasized.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement when I encounter Krennic in Rogue One. He appears to be at the height of his success, yet there’s a hint of unease among the other Imperial leaders, as if they’re whispering, “That looks impressive… I think that might just fall under my jurisdiction now.” So, Krennic is more energized by this, and with the secret that Galen Erso designed the Death Star, I can’t help but hold onto the thought that I, Krennic, was the one who constructed it – such a fitting line for me. In Andor, however, we see a different side of him. He’s still climbing high, but this period seems more carefree, a time of prosperity before any potential challenges might arise.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that while Krennic’s tale concludes in Rogue One, this Imperial powerhouse is poised for further advancement in the upcoming season 2 of Andor. Mark your calendars for May 6, as the next three episodes will be streaming exclusively on Disney+.
