The last few scenes of Andor Season 2 Episode 12 are both tragic and uplifting.
The storyline shows Adria Arjona’s character, Bix Caleen, returning to the Mina-Rau farms and having a child with another character, Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor. It’s understandable that this baby is likely the offspring of both Bix and Cassian. In a recent interview, series creator and showrunner Tony Gilroy explained his reasoning behind writing this specific ending for Bix and Cassian, as well as why Bix parted ways with Andor in previous episodes.
Tony Gilroy explains Bix’s baby was the real reason she leaves Andor in Season 2
Gilroy discussed his reasoning behind providing a hopeful resolution for Bix and Cassian in Andor, a series acting as a prequel to Rogue One, during a recent interview with ScreenRant. It’s worth noting that Cassian meets his demise near the end of the 2016 Star Wars film. In Andor, his final scene shows him embarking on a journey to the Ring of Kafrene to link up with Tivik, an encounter that serves as the character’s initial scene in Rogue One.
The filmmaker shared that he already knew how Cassian and Bix’s story would conclude as he began planning Season 2. He explained further, “There’s a dark cloud hanging over the series, and I felt, not in a dramatic sense but personally, there had to be some glimmer of hope at the end. Otherwise, it just wouldn’t feel right, or even fair. There needs to be a light burning in the window, otherwise, what’s the point of getting up each day?”
In Episode 9 of its second season, Bix chose to depart from Cassian without saying goodbye. In a note she left for him, she conveyed that her departure was due to the fact that she was pregnant at the time, and couldn’t continue being the cause of his decision to abandon the Rebellion. The series finale implies this, and director Gilroy confirmed it in an interview, adding that the concept was intentionally complex to leave room for doubt among viewers: “It’s a complicated idea… I really wanted to underline it for anybody who was doubtful about it. When they get to the end, they go, ‘Oh my God, she was pregnant. That’s why she’s leaving. Really? That’s what she’s not saying? Oh my God.’
All episodes of Andor are currently available for streaming on Disney+.
