Andor Season 2: Why Benjamin Bratt Plays Bail Organa Now

In the sixth episode of Andor Season 2, the character of Bail Organa, who is Leia’s adoptive father, briefly appears on screen. However, in this instance, the actor portraying him is not Jimmy Smits, as he had previously done in various Star Wars productions such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). Instead, it’s Benjamin Bratt who takes on the role in Andor. Showrunner Tony Gilroy has given several interviews explaining why this character replacement was necessary.

Andor Season 2 recast Bail Organa with Benjamin Bratt due to scheduling issues

About midway through Andor Season 2’s episode, there’s a short moment where Mon Mothma, portrayed by Genevieve O’Reilly, and her husband, Perrin (Alastair Mackenzie), are on their way to a social gathering. They unexpectedly run into Benjamin Bratt’s character, Bail Organa, along the way.

The show makes it clear that Bail is the character by the way the three characters engage with each other. According to Tony Gilroy in an interview with ScreenRant, they needed to recast the part and bring in Bratt instead of Smits because of a scheduling issue.

There were numerous factors that made it challenging to reintroduce legacy characters, such as budget constraints, scheduling conflicts, and unavailability of the actor (Jimmy Smits). In this case, he was busy with another project and our timeline was tight, which made coordination difficult. Regrettably, despite our best efforts, we couldn’t find a solution that worked.

Gilroy expressed a similar concern regarding scheduling matters during his interview with Entertainment Weekly.

In the year 1977, the character Senator Bail Organa was introduced in the Star Wars universe through the film Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Regrettably, Bail and the citizens of Alderaan were destroyed when the Galactic Empire deployed the Death Star over their planet.

For the first time, Smits appeared as the character in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002). He later reprised this role in Rogue One (2016), the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), and the video game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (2008). It’s worth mentioning that Phil LaMarr provided the character’s voice in animated shows such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi.
