As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share some insights I picked up from an intriguing interview with Tony Gilroy, the mastermind behind the Andor series. In this chat, he shed light on why we didn’t get to see Andy Serkis as Kino in Season 2 of Andor. Although the first season saw Serkis brilliantly bring Kino to life, leaving us uncertain about his final destiny, it seems that Kino won’t be making an appearance this season. It’s worth mentioning that Serkis has also lent his voice to Supreme Leader Snoke in the Star Wars sequel trilogy films: The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017), and The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
Tony Gilroy explains why Andy Serkis didn’t return as Kino Loy
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gilroy discussed why Kino wasn’t present in Andor Season 2. He stated that they were satisfied with the conclusion they had given to Serkis’ character and didn’t feel it could be enhanced further in Season 2.
Andy let go of the microphone, as Gilroy put it. “What could possibly top what we’ve already achieved?” Gilroy pondered. “Merely trying to improve upon that moment seems to lessen its impact. I was aware of many discussions about how we might resurrect him, but I didn’t want to create a situation where it seemed like a coincidence,” he further explained.
In Season 1 Episode 8, we meet Kino who is a man serving time in Narkina 5. He’s not just any inmate, but the supervisor of Unit Five-Two-D during day shifts. With less than a year remaining on his sentence, Kino aligns with Cassian Andor, portrayed by Diego Luna, to instigate a prison uprising. Using the intercom within the facility, Kino rallies other prisoners, encouraging them to break free from the island prison.
Just before finding himself surrounded by fellow prisoners, he confides in Cassian that he cannot swim. The show does not explicitly disclose what happened to him afterward, but it seems plausible that he either met with a tragic end or was returned to his cell.
In simpler terms, “Andor” is a prequel show that takes place before the events in “Rogue One” (2016). It follows the story of Cassian Andor as he gathers intel on the Empire’s upcoming weapon, the Death Star, before his mission begins.
