Tony Gilroy, the mind behind Andor, has shared his thoughts on why lead actors Diego Luna and Genevieve O’Reilly didn’t receive Emmy nominations this year. With the nominations being announced this week, Gilroy expressed his dismay over their omission, stating that their exceptional performances were unjustly ignored.
Tony Gilroy addresses Diego Luna and Genevieve O’Reilly’s Emmy Snub
As a gamer, I’m really into shows like Andor, and as a fan of this amazing series, I can’t help but notice that creator Tony Gilroy thinks two exceptional performances were unjustly overlooked in its second season Emmy nominations. In an interview with Deadline, Gilroy specifically pointed out the absence of Diego Luna and Genevieve O’Reilly from the acting categories as a topic of concern.
Gilroy stated, “Many performances deserve more recognition, such as those delivered by Diego Luna and Genevieve O’Reilly. In fact, there were around a dozen standout performances. Gilroy emphasized that these actors didn’t just excel in individual scenes or episodes; rather, they gave epic, long-term character portrayals spanning 24 episodes. He expressed his belief that these performances will be admired and talked about for many years to come.
In this storyline, Luna takes the front role as Cassian Andor, a character he introduced back in 2016’s Rogue One. On the other hand, O’Reilly embodies the political leader Mon Mothma, a position she has held across various Star Wars productions. The series ‘Andor’ made its debut in September 2022, and its second season is set to premiere in April 2025, following almost three years of filming.
Regarding revisiting the Star Wars universe, Gilroy mentioned that he’s presently getting ready to film a new project in Los Angeles next year. He didn’t rule out future participation and added, “I’m preparing a movie now to shoot in L.A. next year. It’s not on the schedule yet. I’ll never completely close the door.
Although the most recent Star Wars series garnered the third-highest number of Emmy awards, it managed to receive just one acting nomination. Notably, Forest Whitaker was recognized with a nomination in the Guest Actor in a Drama category for his portrayal of Saw Gerrera.
