Although Bret Easton Ellis has labeled it as “fake news,” a new report hints that an adaptation of the American Psycho film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, might be under development, but its authenticity remains unconfirmed at this point.
Based on recent updates from Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider newsletter, it appears that director Guadagnino continues to work on his upcoming American Psycho film adaptation. It is expected that writer Scott Z. Burns will complete a draft of the script within the coming weeks. Regarding Austin Butler, who was previously reported as the lead for the movie as Patrick Bateman, his involvement has not been confirmed yet. However, Sneider mentions that Guadagnino has met with Butler, among other potential actors, about possibly starring in the film.
According to Sneider’s report, while there has been work on the film, no formal job offers or contracts have been given out yet. This indicates that, at this moment, the movie hasn’t received official approval for production (i.e., it’s not officially greenlit). However, Sneider emphasizes that the project is genuine and important to Lionsgate, referring to it as a high priority.
What do we know about the potential new American Psycho movie?
Previously, there was news that this film wasn’t a remake of another one, but rather a fresh interpretation of Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel. At present, details about the movie such as potential cast members and planned start dates for production remain unknown.
On a recent broadcast, Adam Fogelson, head of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, commended Guadagnino as an exceptionally talented creative individual whom they have faith will excel in his role.
As a devoted admirer, I’m absolutely ecstatic! It’s an incredible pleasure for me to announce that we’ve brought on board another esteemed filmmaker to our upcoming lineup. The exceptional talent is none other than Luca – a true artistic genius. With his unique vision, he promises to breathe fresh life into this iconic and potent intellectual property, offering us a whole new perspective that I can hardly wait to see unfold.
Over the past two years, Guadagnino has kept himself quite occupied. In 2022, he unveiled the romantic horror film “Bones and All,” featuring Taylor Russell and Timothée Chalamet. The following year saw him back with “Challengers,” a romantic sports comedy-drama that starred Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist. Even in 2024, Guadagnino wasn’t done yet, as he released the historical romance drama “Queer” last November.
For Burns, the final credit he receives is as the creator of the Apple TV+ limited series titled Extrapolations. Notably, this isn’t his first time in the spotlight, as he has also been credited for numerous prominent films and is set to create another series, Thumblite, which will be available on Netflix.
