American Murder: Laci Peterson succeeds by keeping the story 'very Laci forward'

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of immersion in the realm of true crime documentaries, I must say that Netflix’s latest offering, “American Murder: Laci Peterson,” is a gripping and well-crafted addition to my collection. The series masterfully weaves together the intricate tapestry of the case, providing a comprehensive yet accessible retelling for both veterans and newcomers alike.

On August 14, Netflix debuted one of their latest true crime documentary series, titled “American Murder: The Investigation of Laci Peterson“, which is a three-part retelling of the case that gripped the nation two decades ago. Throughout the years, Laci Peterson’s tale has been shared in numerous documentaries and television specials, and Netflix’s rendition of this heartbreaking story will air just a week before another docuseries featuring an interview with Scott Peterson, the convicted murderer, from prison.

The Peacock original series “Face to Face with Scott Peterson” premieres on Aug. 20 and is expected to be a hit due to the unique opportunity to hear directly from Scott since 2003. On the other hand, “American Murder: Laci Peterson ” skillfully tells Laci’s story and revisits every detail of the case without Scott’s fresh perspective. However, it was not entirely ruled out as the director of the docuseries mentions they did speak with Scott but he chose not to participate.

As American Murder: Laci Peterson director Skye Borgman told Us Weekly:

We did reach out to Scott and we had a couple of conversations with him in prison. He ultimately decided not to participate in our documentary. It is fine. Especially because I feel like we did get the perspective from his family and that we did want it to be very, very Laci forward.

Skye Borgman, director

As a devoted fan diving into the intriguing world of the Laci Peterson case through “American Murder,” I can confidently say that the series is designed in such a way that even newcomers to this captivating mystery will find it easily approachable. If you’ve never delved into the Petersons’ tale before, or haven’t watched any documentaries on the subject, Netflix and Borgman have meticulously constructed an impartial and comprehensive account of the entire investigation and its aftermath. The series takes us through Laci’s mysterious disappearance and the subsequent law enforcement pursuit of evidence in a straightforward manner, presenting all the facts clearly for the viewer to unravel.

In addition to American Murder, multiple perspectives are presented, ranging from those involved in the investigation and legal proceedings, such as members of the jury, press, police officers, and detectives, to family members like Scott’s sister and sister-in-law, Laci’s mother, friends of Laci, and Amber Frey, who was crucial during the trial. The narrative is not confined to a single perspective.

In a reveal on Netflix’s Tudum, Borgman expressed her desire for Laci to be prominently featured in the retelling of her tale, aiming to highlight the issue of intimate-partner violence. Notably, as portrayed in the docuseries, homicides are one of the top causes of death among pregnant women in the U.S., a startling fact that forms a crucial part of Laci’s narrative and is meticulously explored in American Murder by those who cherished her and her unborn child, Conner.

The documentary titled “American Murder: Laci Peterson” is not a light viewing experience. The narrative, which chronicles her disappearance on Christmas in 2002 and Scott’s subsequent conviction in 2004, will undoubtedly tug at your heartstrings. However, for those who are keen on gaining insights into this sensational case that captivated the nation twenty years ago, and to hear from the people directly involved, it is highly recommended you give it a watch.
