American Girl introduces Summer McKinny as Girl of the Year

As a longtime admirer of American Girl and their inspiring line of dolls, I must say that Summer McKinny truly embodies the spirit of determination, empathy, and entrepreneurship that this brand represents. Her story resonates with me deeply, especially as someone who also hails from the bustling town of Columbia, Maryland (though my claim to fame is probably not quite as impressive as the Artists’ Gallery or B&O Railroad Museum!).

American Girl isn’t ready to wrap up either the year or the summer without unveiling Summer McKinny, their chosen representative for 2025’s Girl of the Year.

Of course, it’s clear that Summer McKinny wouldn’t have been chosen as Girl of the Year if American Girl hadn’t created a backstory and character for her.

10-year-old Summer McKinny isn’t your typical child; instead, she’s already embarking on her entrepreneurial journey early. She runs her own dog-walking business, demonstrating remarkable ambition at such a young age. For those curious about her location, Summer hails from Columbia, Maryland, a place that boasts attractions like the Artists’ Gallery and B&O Railroad Museum, along with many other intriguing spots.

By engaging Summer McKinny for your canine companion’s strolls, you’re not only ensuring your pet gets exercise but also contributing to a good cause. That’s because Summer generously donates part of her earnings to a local animal shelter. Interestingly, Summer herself is a rescuer, having adopted her dog, Crescent, from a shelter close to her residence.

When not engaged with Crescent or walking dogs for neighbors, Summer often spends time baking and enthusiastically adorning food as it emerges from the oven. Instead of figuring out everything by herself, she leans on her aunt and sister for advice, transforming what could be a solo kitchen task into a joyful group endeavor.

During fall, Summer might travel from Maryland to visit her grandparents in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. She could explore the town by walking along the Rehoboth Boardwalk or spend time at amusement parks like Funland and Jungle Jim’s. There are numerous enjoyable activities for Summer to partake in during her stay in her grandparents’ hometown.

To celebrate Summer and reinforce American Girl’s emphasis on reading, American Girl is giving away more than $100,000 worth of their books as a donation. These books will be distributed to Save the Children’s educational initiatives within the United States.

Make sure to celebrate American Girl’s choice of 2025’s Girl of the Year, Summer McKinny.
