As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experience under my belt, I must say this latest news about AMD securing the chip development for the PlayStation 6 has me pretty excited! I’ve been a loyal AMD fan since the days of the Athlon XP, and seeing them power the next generation of consoles is just fantastic.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m always on the lookout for the next big thing, and that includes speculating about the PlayStation 6. While it might still be a few years away, it seems like tech companies are already gearing up for the challenge. A recent report hints that AMD has clinched a deal worth approximately $30 billion to manufacture chips for the PS6. That’s quite a significant contract, and it looks like AMD managed to edge out Intel, who was reportedly also in the running but couldn’t reach an agreement with Sony before negotiations concluded.
This report originates from Reuters, who disclosed information about AMD potentially partnering with Sony in the development of the PlayStation 6’s APU (Application Processor Unit), while Intel reportedly failed to secure the deal due to disagreements over profit margins. According to sources privy to the business negotiations, both AMD and Intel were the final contenders vying for the opportunity, a partnership that analysts anticipate could generate billions of dollars since the chosen company would be responsible for manufacturing chips for an extended period. Regrettably for Intel, they could not reach terms with Sony, allowing AMD to move forward in creating the chip for the next generation of PlayStations.
It’s apparent that AMD has been chosen to create both the CPU and GPU for the PlayStation 5, and it appears likely that they will also power the PS5 Pro. On the other hand, Intel has faced numerous challenges and financial struggles, resulting in a surprising revenue loss during Q2 2024. To address these issues, they have announced a $10 billion cost reduction plan that is expected to impact approximately 15,000 employees. In essence, things seem to be going poorly for Intel due to a series of unfavorable developments.
We’re yet to know exactly what’s inside the PlayStation 6, as Sony or AMD haven’t fully revealed yet. It’s predicted that the console won’t be released until around 2028, so we might have to wait a while before learning about its specifications. Keep an eye on Shacknews for more news and updates when they become available!
