Amazon Prime’s ‘House of David’: Season’s Most Shocking Moments Yet

13 Samuel told Saul, “You’ve acted unwisely; you didn’t obey the command of the Lord your God as He instructed you. In fact, had you obeyed, the Lord would have made your rule over Israel eternal.

It seems now my rule is at an end; for the Lord has found a man who mirrors His own spirit, and He’s entrusted him with leading our people. Sadly, I failed to uphold what the Lord instructed me. – 1 Samuel: 13-14 (First person perspective)

The House of David is an expansive narrative chronicling the life of David, who eventually ascended to become the second king of Israel. Known as a man whom God regarded with special favor, it was through his descendants that the prophecy of the Messiah’s arrival was foretold – ultimately manifesting in the form of Jesus Christ.

A week ago, our discussion revolved around episode 5 titled “The Wolf and the Lion“. It was brimming with courtly machinations and political maneuvers. I’d advise you to revisit that review to steer clear of further spoilers! “The Wolf and the Lion” lived up to the standards we had grown accustomed to, and we fervently hoped that “Giants Awakened ” would maintain that pace. Did it manage to do so?

***Spoilers Ahead***

Episode 6: Giants Awakened

The narrative kicks off, introduced by Orpah – the mother of these colossal beings – offering a fashionably choreographed recap of the biblical origins of the giants. Born were these giants, descendants of the Nephilim, fallen angels who mingled with humans against God’s will. In darkness banished, these Nephilim offspring, Orpah’s giant sons, mourn their celestial heritage while hiding in a secluded cave.

In the novel “Giants Awakened”, several significant events unfold that lead us towards the last two installments, and these developments can be both exciting and challenging.

As I strum the strings of my harp once more, soothing King Saul yet again with my music, he gazes at me wistfully and admits his envy for the seemingly uncomplicated life I lead. We find common ground in our shared past as shepherds, bonding over memories of green pastures and tending to flocks.

In a surprising turn of events, Saul urges me not to let one man rob me of my destiny. This seems to be his way of criticizing Samuel’s anointment of another, yet it also serves as an encouragement for me to embrace the throne that awaits me. It is in this moment that I sense both a warning and an empowering message from the king himself.

In the episode, Mychal gazes at the throne and reveals to her sister Mirab that she’s developing feelings for David. However, the queen’s malicious comments about him left a mark. Later on, she secretly brings David to her chamber and challenges him regarding his bastard status. David admits he didn’t disclose this information because he was scared of losing Mychal, and pleads with her to flee together. Mychal acknowledges her feelings for him, but differentiates between passion and fate.

As a movie buff, I found an intriguing moment where I, as the viewer, witness a young lad named Reuben being escorted to a skilled assassin called Doeg. Under duress, Reuben is forced to disclose what he saw and heard the night a man named Samuel dropped by Saul. This seemingly insignificant scene later proves crucial in the plotline.

In simpler terms, King Achish of the Philistines returns home accompanied by Orpah and her colossal sons. His intention is to mobilize them for a joint attack on the Israelites. Interestingly, he presents Goliath with an impressive sword and shield, both crafted from premium metal.

Instead of coaxing them gently out of their hiding places, Orpah employs tough negotiation tactics. She declares that her sons will only join the king’s forces if he grants Goliath his throne. Unprepared for such a sudden turn of events, King Achish is taken aback and dismisses her suggestion. However, Orpah issues a chilling warning: once awakened, giants rarely return to their peaceful slumber. This threat is a clear challenge to King Achish’s authority and a significant setback for his plans to control the Philistines.

Later on, it’s Doeg who shows up and shares with King Achish the details he gathered concerning Saul. Is Saul now under Abner’s command, or has he decided to chart his own course?

In the novel “Giants Awaken“, Saul’s descent into madness following the loss of the Holy Spirit persists. When his leading commanders and son Jonathan debate the Philistines mobilizing for war, Saul assertively declares that Israel will engage them in battle since God is protecting them. A distant rumble of thunder echoes as Saul stubbornly clings to delusion, seeking to maintain his position on the throne.

Meanwhile, as Saul experiences another intense dream, at the Queen’s command, the sorceress Besai collects some of the King’s blood to concoct a potion. While Saul sleeps, Besai employs her magical abilities in an attempt to reveal the identity of the newly anointed one, with the Queen watching closely.

In this series, I had high expectations for Jonathan’s character given his strong personality and unwavering faith in the Bible. The show lived up to these expectations in this episode, as we saw Jonathan boldly asserting God’s rule when he finds himself in a tense situation. Upon entering the scene, he even throws Besai to the ground and declares that God governs their household!

In the background, Saul appears weakened, while Besai cautions Jonathan that he will never ascend to the throne. This warning ultimately leads Jonathan to challenge his father and seek out Samuel to understand what is happening with the king.

In summary, Jonathan deduces that there’s only one location where Samuel might be, and upon reaching Mount Sinai, he dreams of a vision similar to Saul’s in “The Anointing,” depicting his family in conflict. Upon finding Samuel, Jonathan queries if another has been anointed. Samuel then inquires whether Jonathan serves God or the throne. Readers familiar with the Bible would recognize the response to this question. Samuel subsequently discloses that he has indeed anointed another, a king whose rule knows no end, hinting at the prophesied messiah, Jesus Christ.

In the final moments of “Giants Awaken,” there’s a surprising event I won’t reveal, but it lays the groundwork for the two-part season finale. Watching this episode, I found myself wishing the showrunners had been given more time by Amazon, as the amount of plot unfolding felt like it could have benefited from an extra episode or two to develop the story further.

As a passionate movie-goer, I’d rephrase it like this: “In Giants Awaken, we delve into the emotional depths of Goliath and his brother, a narrative twist that a series like House of David might adopt for dramatic effect. This particular episode seems to push the boundaries with extra plotlines not explicitly found in the Holy Bible. I’m eagerly anticipating how these stories unfold in the upcoming final two episodes, which I absolutely plan on watching.
