In the game Dead by Daylight, there’s a multitude of formidable antagonists. Some of these formidable villains are unique creations like The Unknown, while others are tied to collaborations with well-known licensed properties such as Michael Myers from Halloween. Amongst the most renowned, yet notorious, killers in Dead by Daylight is The Nightmare. Excitingly, Behaviour Interactive is providing an impressive overhaul improving Freddy Krueger’s performance in DBD.
As a devoted Dead By Daylight gamer, I’m buzzing with excitement for what’s coming our way this new year! Just dropped is the stunning Junji Ito skin collection that’s got me itching to jump back into the game. The January roadmap has us eagerly awaiting the comeback of the Chaos Shuffle LTM, which is sure to bring some chaotic fun very soon. In February, we’ll finally unmask the licensed killer making their appearance in March – rumor has it they’re hailing from Tokyo Ghoul! And hot on its heels, we’ll get our hands on a killer and survivor from FNAF. Bring it on, 2025!
Indeed, this looks set to be another exceptional year for DBD, and Behavior Interactive is kicking off 2025 in style by rejuvenating the beloved character, Freddy Krueger, with numerous boosts.
New Dead By Daylight updates fixes Freddy Krueger
Behaviour Interactive is introducing several enhancements to The Nightmare character in Dead By Daylight. Players will get a taste of these improvements in a Public Test Build (PTB) this week on Steam, with the full update becoming accessible to all in the last week of January.
Below are the buffs, changes, and more confirmed for Freddy Krueger in DBD:
In the world of horror icons, Freddy Krueger from “The Nightmare” stands out as one of the most recognized slashers. Although he’s been a tough opponent for newer characters, his presence seems to have diminished a bit in the current setting of Dead by Daylight. We’re eager to help players relive the chilling thrill of putting on Freddy’s signature sweater and causing chaos as only he can!
We’ve significantly altered Freddy’s power, aiming to make him embody the Dream Demon he was meant to be effortlessly. Our goal was to ensure that the influence of the Dream World is felt by survivors, even when they are awake, thereby intensifying The Nightmare’s menacing aura with an unprecedented level of fluidity and versatility.
- [CHANGE] Press Active Ability to swap between Dream Snares and Dream Pallets.
Developer Note: This feature has been frequently requested and we’re excited to finally bring it to life! The Nightmare will now be able to truly embody his name by slowing down Survivors and causing psychological distress. Swiftly switching between abilities offers an increased level of skill for the Killer, while providing him with two unique tactics to employ during a chase.
- [NEW] Dream Snares now move at 12 m/s with a cooldown of 5 seconds. They can go through walls and up stairs, but not off ledges.
- [NEW] Dream Snares now have unique interactions with Survivors whether they are Asleep or Awake. Sleeping Survivors will be Hindered for 4 seconds, while Awake Survivors will gain 30 seconds on their Sleep Meter
Developer’s Note: This update enhances The Nightmare’s versatility with the Snare, enabling him to employ it against a broader range of adversaries. No longer requiring Survivors to be asleep for the effect will significantly alter gameplay dynamics – not just in terms of power balance, but also thematically.
- [NEW] Dream Pallets can be triggered to explode in a geyser of blood. The explosion occurs 1.5 seconds after activation with a 3-meter radius. When a sleeping Survivor is hit, they become injured. When an Awake Survivor is hit, they gain 60 seconds on their Sleep Timer.
Developer’s Note: Playing with Dream Pallets in this game has been enjoyable and fulfilling as we trick Survivors. To make it more advantageous when a deception succeeds, we’ve introduced an additional feature: if the Survivor manages to escape the chase, there’s now a chance they’ll pick up a memento as a reminder of their encounter with you.
- [NEW] The Nightmare can now teleport to completed, blocked, and endgame Generators, as well as any Survivor healing in the Dreamworld. Dream Projection on a healing Survivor will teleport The Nightmare within 12 meters of their position. Upon completing a teleport, Survivors within 8 meters will be revealed with Killer Instinct and gain 15 seconds to their Sleep Meter.
- [CHANGE] The Teleport cooldown has been decreased from 45 to 30 seconds, and the Teleport can no longer be cancelled.
Note on Development: A key aspect of The Nightmare’s gameplay involves giving the impression of being simultaneously omnipresent, and his Dream Projection plays a significant role in achieving this. We’ve introduced some tweaks to enhance this ability even further, and have eliminated a previous issue where Survivor progress could render The Nightmare’s Power ineffective.
Ultimately, the Dream Realm. But beware, it’s not as serene as the name implies. Instead, this psychological torment facility is a far cry from a dream. Our intention with this update was to instill fear, anxiety, and urgency in those sleeping Survivors – so we subtly but significantly adjusted some key aspects.
- [NEW] In the Dream World, Healing Survivors will be revealed by Killer Instinct for as long as they’re healing (lingering for 3 seconds once they stop), allowing The Nightmare to teleport to them.
Apart from enhancing gameplay, we’re adding some aesthetic touches to the Dream World, aiming to make it more captivating and enchanting. Rest assured, we’ll keep refining this magical realm, so stay tuned for additional updates in the future!
- [CHANGE] Sleeping Survivors can use any Alarm Clock to wake up.
- [NEW] After using an Alarm Clock, it goes on cooldown for 45 seconds, during which it cannot be used.
Developer’s Note: To enhance the Survivor side gameplay, we aimed to resolve some common annoyances, particularly regarding Alarm Clocks and the wake-up process. We believe these modifications will significantly boost the enjoyment of confronting The Nightmare without altering the overall game balance substantially.
The Nightmare’s Add-Ons
Completing the overhaul, there’s an extensive modification to all The Nightmare’s Expansion Packs, designed to spark creativity when you’re planning your future equipment setup. Although the comprehensive list is too extensive to present here, let me share a few notable Expansion Packs arriving with this update:
1. The Shadow’s Embrace: This add-on introduces stealth enhancements that allow for quieter movement and undetected strikes.
2. The Phantom’s Veil: Enhance your invisibility abilities, blending seamlessly into the environment.
3. The Beast’s Roar: Unleash a powerful roar that disorients enemies, giving you the upper hand in close combat.
4. The Shade’s Echo: This add-on amplifies your ability to manipulate time, allowing for strategic retreats and swift returns.
Red Paint Brush (Iridescent)
- [OLD] All Survivors start the trial in the Dream World. Failed Skill Checks do not wake up Survivors in the Dream World.
- [NEW] Reveals the aura of Survivors in the Dream World when they are further than 32 meters away. Increases each Survivor’s Sleep Meter by 50%.
Black Box (Iridescent)
- [OLD] Recently opened Exit Gates are blocked for 15 seconds.
- [NEW] Exit Gates are blocked for Sleeping Survivors for 15 seconds when they are opened.
Swing Chains (Very Rare)
- [OLD] Rusty but sturdy chains used to securely attach a swing seat. While Survivors are in the Dream World, the sounds of their footsteps are 50% louder.
- [NEW] After using Dream Projection, block all vaults within 16 meters for 6 seconds.
As a gamer, I’m excitedly waiting for the complete roster of new features when the update drops. The Dream Demon is definitely going to have an arsenal of chilling capabilities at its disposal from then on!
