Allison Williams Says Intimacy Coordinator for Girls Scene Would Have Been ‘Helpful’

In the past, girls might have spoken for an entire generation, but according to Allison Williams, one crucial voice was absent on set during filming – that of an intimacy coordinator. As the HBO series reemerges in cultural discussions, Williams is contemplating how shooting those daring, uninhibited scenes could have been different if they had the support and guidance now considered standard in the industry.

Allison Williams opens up about Girls scenes

On the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, the actress who portrayed the character Marnie Michaels, Williams, opened up about the real-life happenings during filming.

Allison Williams shared that dealing with the intimate scenes in Girls, without adequate guidance, proved difficult. Reflecting on the experience, she expressed that having an intimacy coordinator during their numerous explicit scenes could have been beneficial. “It would have been fantastic,” she stated, “to have someone who oversees sex scenes as if they were a department head.

A specific scene from the series that she remembers vividly is the controversial opening of Season 4, where Marnie has an encounter with Desi, portrayed by Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Williams mentioned that since there wasn’t a professional to direct this intimate moment, Lena Dunham and executive producer Jenni Konner actually demonstrated it for her, making it as awkward as one would expect from their performance.

Jenni was bending over a window ledge, and Lena stood behind her, grinning and saying something along the lines of ‘This is exactly how we envision it,'” Williams remarked. “I responded with a similar enthusiasm, ‘Fantastic!’ But they seemed occupied, which was actually someone else’s task.

It’s worth noting that HBO first employed official intimacy coordinators during the very same year Girls concluded its run. Starting with stuntwoman Alicia Rodis on The Deuce in 2017, this role became standard across all their productions shortly afterwards.

Since then, Williams has had the opportunity to work with one, and she’s fully committed. “When everyone comes together for it… You already know what outfit suits your skin tone for the scene, the guidelines are set, whether your co-star prefers a specific kind of on-screen kiss or not. So everyone is just prepared and ready to start, and it’s really pleasant.
