As a seasoned gamer with memories of popping discs into PlayStations spanning generations, the news of Sony potentially ditching the disc drive for the PlayStation 5 Pro has left me slightly disheartened, to say the least. I can almost hear the collective gasp from fellow retro gamers echoing in the gaming universe.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the reveal of Sony’s rumored PlayStation 5 Pro. While industry whispers have been circulating for quite some time, this console has remained shrouded in mystery. However, recent leaks from a trusted Sony source have shed light on the potential design of the PS5 Pro, and it seems that the disc drive might be a thing of the past.
PS5 Pro design shared
Based on discussions by PS5 Pro game developers at Gamescom, well-known leaker Billbil-Kun has shared insights about the appearance of Sony’s mid-generation upgrade.
According to claimed photos of the PS5 Pro’s packaging, as well as artistic representations and renderings, its design appears to be quite similar. In truth, it seems that the console shares many features with a regular PS5 model, even featuring the same front I/O.
The design of the PS5 Pro resembles a typical console but features three black lines rather than one. Interestingly, these new models can potentially accommodate faceplates from previous versions as well.
From the outside, the rumored PS5 Pro design appears to have the identical input/output (IO) setup as the current slim model. In other words, there are two USB-C ports and a power button on the front side, but details about the rear ports remain unclear.
To add on, this console model lacks an integrated controller. However, there are rumors about a new DualSense controller being developed; yet, it remains uncertain if this upcoming console will be bundled with it.
No disc tray?
The main concern about the rumored PS5 Pro design is that it seems to be missing a disc drive. Although this hasn’t been officially confirmed, there are indications that at least one variant of the upcoming device might not have a disc drive, which could make it more expensive.
According to the report, the image we’re looking at was taken from a PS5 Pro model that doesn’t include a disc drive. As for whether there’s a version with a disc drive, it’s unclear at this point, though it’s likely that such a model could be produced (similar to the PS5 Slim).
Given the strong sales of the PS5 Digital Edition, it’s possible that Sony is considering removing the disc drive from their Pro model to maintain affordability. Yet, since the Pro model is marketed as a premium gaming device, the absence of a disc drive might be disappointing to some.
There hasn’t been an official announcement about when the PS5 Pro will be released yet, but rumors suggest it might come out towards the end of this year.
