In much the same way that discovering fresh finds significantly contributes to an expedition’s comprehension of uncharted territories, obtaining a decent number of elusive native species, comparable to the importance of tracking top-tier predators in Monster Hunter Wilds, can be equally significant.
Even though some of these creatures may appear obvious, numerous others might leave you longing for an encounter with a frantic protector. To swiftly locate and capture them all, here’s a guide on the rare endemic/aquatic life spots within Monster Hunter Wilds and how to identify them effectively.

All Windward Plains rare endemic life locations in Monster Hunter Wilds
While traversing the enchanting Windward Plains area within Monster Hunter Wilds, you may discover two unique and endemic creatures: the Sandstar and the elusive Black Windrustler. For your convenience, I’ve provided their respective locations below.
Sandstar
As a gamer, I stumbled upon an adorable, luminescent critter that seemed to compensate for the aggravation I faced during my quest to discover it. This elusive Sandstar can be found in the lofty reaches of Area 13, but only at night and exclusively during the Plenty and Fallow seasons. Interestingly, encounters with it are more frequent during the Fallow season. Here’s where I finally managed to track down one of these luminescent treasures:
Given that they can cover ground swiftly and may spot you from afar, even with a Ghillie Mantle, carry some Screamer Pods to momentarily disorient your target before deploying your net for capture. Catching the elusive Sandstar will grant you the I Caught a Shooting Star trophy/achievement.
Black Windrustler
In simple terms, Black Windrustlers are swift creatures that you can typically encounter in regions 7, 8, and 10 of the plains during the season of abundance. Despite being quite rare, their black scales make them easy to identify in the surroundings due to their stark contrast with the environment. As illustrated in the image below, we successfully spotted one in Area 7.
All Scarlet Forest rare endemic life locations in Monster Hunter Wilds
In the region within Monster Hunter Wilds known for its abundance of unique, endemic, and aquatic creatures, specifically the Scarlet Forest, a total of seven distinct species can be discovered. Noticeably, many of these creatures are typically spotted during the bountiful season, as illustrated below.
Hymstrigian
In Area 8, look for the Hymstrigian perched on a river branch, particularly in the shallows. It doesn’t seem to be overly fussy about the time or season here, but I’ve noticed them more frequently during daylight and during the Season of Plenty. If you can’t find it upon arrival, give it some time before reloading the environment, as they tend to make a few rounds before returning.
Dazzlewing
Each Plenty season, I find myself scouring the Scarlet Forest for those elusive creatures – the Dazzlewings. These captivating birds are often perched atop the remnants of broken trees, particularly in Areas 6 and 11. Being diurnal, they are most active during daylight hours, making their favorite spot the tree trunk’s underside a common sighting location.
Reminiscent of the Hymstrigian, these birds maintain an air of calmness that makes them difficult to startle. With a well-aimed net throw and a bit of patience, one can successfully capture a Dazzlewing.
Regal Jewel Scarab
In my gaming adventures, I stumbled upon Regal Jewel Scarabs hidden within the barks of grand trees in zones 2 and 3 of the Scarlet Forest. The tricky part is, these vibrant, dual-toned bugs can exclusively be discovered in the Fallow area, and they appear to only materialize on trees oozing the distinctive crimson sap. As you’ll notice from my screenshots, we managed to find them right in the first tree trunk facing the Base Camp region.
Goliath Squid
In Area 17’s vast lake at night, you may encounter the elusive Goliath Squid. While I can’t definitively say if they are limited to a specific season, I personally spotted them frequently during the Season of Plenty. What sets this catch apart is that it requires the use of Tentacle Jigs as bait. Successfully landing the squid will reward you with the prestigious Monster (Squid) Hunter Trophy/Achievement.
Petricanths
A new discovery underwater: Petricanths in Monster Hunter Wilds near a small lake adjacent to the Ruin Interior Camp in Area 16. This elusive fish is more frequently spotted during the season of Abundance and can be caught using a standard fishing net, unlike the Goliath Squid. Players have reported catching it in Oilwell Basin’s Area 14 as well, although I didn’t manage to find any there myself.
Curioshell Crab
In Monster Hunter Wilds, the Curioshell Crab, a rather uncommon and unique lifeform, is often spotted with relative ease. You can locate this creature at the Underground Lake Camp in Area 8. Typically, you’ll see it about 8 times out of 10 if you follow the indicated spot in the image below. While they might be seen throughout all seasons, I found myself finding them most frequently during the Season of Plenty.
You can also discover a crab at Windward Plains, specifically near Groundwater Vein Camp (Area 14), which lies to the right. Once you’ve collected the Curioshell Crab, you’ll earn the Achievement/Trophy titled “A Prize Held High.
Grand Escunite and Escunite
At Area 8 Underground Lake Camp during the Season of Plenty, you’ll find an abundance of both Grand Escunites and regular Escunites if you fish in the subterranean lake near the campsite. Their distinctly larger size, vibrant coloring, and unique shape make them easy to identify among the crustaceans. Similar to Petricanths, those who prefer a change from conventional fishing can catch both varieties of these aquatic creatures using their nets.
All Oilwell Basin rare endemic life locations in Monster Hunter Wilds
While venturing through the Oilwell Basin area, you may come across three elusive native species that are scarcely found elsewhere. The Peony Sparklerjelly is particularly challenging to locate among these game creatures. Here’s a guide on where to find and catch each specimen:
1. Peony Sparklerjelly: This vibrant, bioluminescent jellyfish can be spotted in the deepest, darkest parts of the Oilwell Basin’s caves. Use your light source to attract it, then carefully approach and trap it with a suitable container.
2. Basin Blinker Beetle: Look for this tiny, glowing insect in the dense undergrowth near the riverbanks. Keep an eye out for their brief, blinking lights as you move through the area. Use a net to capture them easily.
3. Oilwell Owl: The rare Oilwell Owl can be found perched on the old oil rigs scattered across the region. They are most active at dusk, so visit during these hours for the best chance of spotting one. Once you’ve located it, use a snare to trap the owl without disturbing it too much.
Azure Rufflizard
For those tired of seeking creatures that easily get agitated, you’ll be delighted to discover Azure Rufflizards scattered throughout the Oilwell Basin region, as they often share their green kin’s spawn points. If you’re planning a hunt or focusing your search, I advise starting at Area 4, where the lizard is commonly spotted relaxing near the ancient forge.
Peony Sparklerjelly
In Monster Hunter Wilds, the exceptionally unique and scarcely found creature, the Peony Sparklerjelly, can be discovered while traversing areas 13 and 14 during the Plenty season. This elusive being is active exclusively during the evening or nighttime. Unlike common Sparklerjellies, the Peony Sparklerjelly seems like a massive floating cell from afar. However, its size can be misleading because just one tossed Capture Net should suffice to catch it and complete your collection. Here’s where we successfully located the Peony Sparklerjelly:
Nu Yaya
In Area 17 of the Basin, you’ll encounter and capture the elusive creature known as Nu Yaya, which is unique to Nu Udra’s offspring. Unlike other scarce endemic finds in this region, the Nu Yaya will only emerge there, provided you visit during the Firespring (Inclemency) season. However, an exception applies: a Tempered Nu Udra must be wandering the map for the Nu Yaya to appear.
Performing that action will cause Alma to indicate where the eggs are hidden within the apex’s den, ensuring that you’ll find plenty of Nu Yaya during the next season of abundance. However, before that can happen, you must progress to Hunter Level 40 and finish the “What Lies Ahead” quest to enable the chance for encountering a Tempered Nu Udra.
All Iceshard Cliffs and Ruins of Wyveria rare endemic life locations in Monster Hunter Wilds
During our exploration of the Iceshard Cliffs and Ruins of Wyveria, we discovered three elusive native species that are quite scarce. Notably, the ruins area proved to be particularly challenging to spot these specimens. For your convenience, you can find the locations of all of them detailed below:
or
We encountered three extremely hard-to-find native lifeforms in both the Iceshard Cliffs and Ruins of Wyveria areas during our expedition. The ruins region was particularly difficult to spot these specimens. For your convenience, you can find the locations of all of them detailed below:
Downy Crake
You can encounter Downy Crakes in MH Wilds, particularly on the backs of small creatures scampering around Iceshard Cliffs during the Fallow season. Their exact locations aren’t easy to determine, but we’ve observed them frequently perched on Rafmas in Area 12 throughout the daytime. Once you locate a group of Crakes, simply cast your net to catch them. If one of the creatures carrying them becomes hostile, deal with it accordingly.
Gillopod
In the ruins of Wyveria, we came across several Gillopods near the path that connects Crumbling Structure Camp to Area 2, as indicated below. These unique creatures are exclusive to the Wyvern’s Stirring (Inclemency) season and can only appear during daylight hours.
Prism Hercudrome
The last creature on our list, the Prism Hercudrome, is found exclusively at MH Wilds, specifically at the tree marked in the image below, which stands in the heart of Ruins of Wyveria’s Area 6. However, take note that this elusive creature only shows up during Plenty and can only be spawned late at night – just before dawn within the game.
To increase your chances of encountering the creature, I recommend going to the marked location at night and establishing a campsite there, keeping in mind that this region is known for its abundance of active monsters. Therefore, it’s advisable to bring along your Ghillie Mantle as well.
How to display rare endemic life in MH Wilds
In Monster Hunter Wilds, it’s not possible to exhibit your unique endemic discoveries freely. Instead, once you’ve captured one, you can view them at the main tent in the Windward Plains Base Camp. Interestingly, only one creature is visible at the tent at any given time, and this changes randomly after each reset of the area.
