Wondering what’s happening with recent changes at MSNBC? It seems they’re making significant modifications to their program schedule, which has resulted in the cancellation of various shows and a rearrangement of key on-air personalities. These alterations are igniting debates about the potential fates of several hosts and the evolution of MSNBC’s television content.
Let’s dissect the reasons for these cancellations, understand their underlying logic, and consider potential implications for the future.
Every show MSNBC has canceled in its shakeup
The Katie Phang Show
MSNBC has decided to discontinue The Katie Phang Show, which is part of a larger restructuring of their programming lineup. This weekend program provided legal commentary and gave voice to perspectives that are often underrepresented, particularly those from the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.
Katie Phang shared her dismay, saying, “I was taken aback when I learned this morning that The Katie Phang Show is being terminated.” She emphasized her sense of accomplishment in amplifying AAPI voices and extended her gratitude to her team. Phang will continue her work with MSNBC as a legal analyst.
Ayman
MSNBC has discontinued the show “Ayman,” previously hosted by Ayman Mohyeldin. However, he’s not leaving MSNBC entirely; instead, he’ll be shifting to a revamped evening version of “The Weekend,” a collective program with new format.
The choice made by MSNBC coincides with their move towards multi-host programs. It was announced that the last episode of “Ayman” is expected to air on April 20, 2025. Previously, Mohyeldin served as host for Morning Joe First Look and has covered international conflicts extensively.
José Díaz-Balart Reports
Jose Diaz-Balart’s daily news program, “Jose Diaz-Balart Reports,” is being discontinued by MSNBC as they move away from programming based in Miami. However, Diaz-Balart will still be hosting NBC Nightly News on weekends, but he will no longer anchor a weekday show on MSNBC.
The cancellation is simply one aspect of a larger plan to centralize MSNBC’s production in New York City and Washington D.C. As stated by MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler, the network aims to grow its Washington presence, even going so far as to set up a new bureau in the process. (Based on The Hollywood Reporter)
The ReidOut
MSNBC has confirmed that Joy Reid’s show, The ReidOut, is concluding. For now, the 7 PM time slot will be hosted by various temporary replacements until a new program lineup is established.
MSNBC’s management expressed gratitude to Joy for her numerous contributions spanning many years. Her departure signifies a change in MSNBC’s prime time schedule, with a fresh program set to air, hosted by Symone Sanders-Townsend, Alicia Menendez, and Michael Steele.
Alex Wagner Tonight
MSNBC is discontinuing “Alex Wagner Tonight,” with Alex Wagner moving into a senior political analyst position. Beginning when The Rachel Maddow Show resumes its weekly schedule, Jen Psaki will assume the hosting role for the Tuesday-to-Friday 9 p.m. time slot.
Beginning from 2022, Wagner has been tasked with carrying on the work she started when she took over from Maddow, expanding across various platforms at MSNBC. MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler highlighted Wagner’s “journalistic and production skills” and her significant role during election coverage.
The Saturday Show and The Sunday Show
MSNBC is making changes to its weekend programming lineup by ending Jonathan Capehart’s Saturday and Sunday shows. However, Capehart will continue working for the network as he takes on a co-host role in The Weekend, which is expanding to offer both morning and evening episodes.
It’s been verified that Capehart will host the morning program, while Ayman Mohyeldin will present during primetime. To cover the weekends and fill in the gaps, MSNBC is extending Ali Velshi’s show, “Velshi.
