All Annapurna Interactive staff has resigned after dispute with owner

As a passionate gamer who has eagerly anticipated many upcoming titles from Annapurna Interactive, I was taken aback by the recent news of their staff resignation. Having followed the development and publication of some truly groundbreaking games under this label, it’s disheartening to witness such upheaval behind the scenes.

It appears that the publishing division of Annapurna Interactive has experienced a large-scale departure of employees, as all 25 staff members have decided to resign. Negotiations for an independent entity did not work out, leading to this situation. Now, Annapurna Interactive is in a rush to find replacements and address any worries among developers.

On September 12, 2024, Bloomberg announced that all 25 employees at Annapurna Interactive had left their positions due to disagreements with owner Megan Ellison. The report also mentioned that the head of the company, Nathan Gary, and his team were in talks with Ellison about establishing a separate, self-governing version of the company.

Megan Ellison provided a statement to Bloomberg News:

Our primary focus is on assisting our developer and publishing partners throughout this transition period. We are dedicated not just to our current lineup of games but also to increasing our impact in the interactive sector. As we explore further opportunities, we aim to adopt a more unified method for blending linear and interactive storytelling across films, TV shows, video games, and theater.

This situation has sparked quite a reaction among developers who contracted Annapurna Interactive to publish their video games. As Jason Shreier notes, Annapurna not only provides funding but also handles tasks like quality assurance, adapting the products for different markets, and marketing. According to Annapurna Interactive’s statement, these games will continue under their management.

In collaboration, Remedy, known for critically praised games such as Control and the upcoming Alan Wake 2, and Annapurna have joined forces. Their aim is to broaden the Remedy Connected Universe across mediums like movies and TV series through adaptation.

Based on sources familiar with the matter, President Hector Sanchez reportedly assured developers that Annapurna will uphold contracts and rehire staff who have left. It appears that ongoing projects at Annapurna Interactive are still moving forward. For the most recent information about the publisher and its projects, check out our Annapurna Interactive topic.
