All American showrunner confirms season 7 will return to the show's YA roots

As a devoted fan of “All American,” I can’t help but reflect on the journey of Spencer James and how his story has resonated with me throughout the show’s six seasons. When we first met him back in 2018, he was a determined teen with a dream to play in the NFL. He was different from other characters on TV at that time – a Black lead in a sea of shows catering primarily to adults. What set Spencer apart was his unwavering belief in his potential and his desire to lift up those around him.

In the final episode of “All American” season 6, which aired on July 15, 2022, Spencer James’ story came to a complete conclusion. When we first met Spencer back in 2018, he was a teen with ambitious dreams of playing in the NFL. His character had not yet been tested by the hardships that would mold him into the man he ultimately became. Despite this, his innate heart, sense of community, and strong sense of duty made him a compelling and memorable figure on TV during those early days.

In the world outside of The CW, there was a noticeable absence of programming for teens on the schedules of major broadcast networks. Instead, streaming platforms like Netflix were filling this gap, and cable channels such as Freeform continued to cater to this demographic (even if they have experienced a decrease in teen-focused content themselves in recent times).

Spencer stood out uniquely among other teen shows, being the sole Black lead amidst an ocean of adult-focused programming. He wasn’t portrayed as a problematic youth or someone in need of guidance. Instead, he was a determined young man with ambition, striving for success and eager to uplift those around him, just as he knew he would once granted the chance to shine brightly.

For approximately three and a half seasons, “All American” focused on Spencer’s high school experiences. The series highlighted both his triumphs and struggles, as well as those of his friends and loved ones. Many believe that these seasons offered the most compelling storylines and effectively conveyed the show’s core themes of family, community, and perseverance amid adversity.

In other words, with Daniel Ezra leaving the show, “All American” is returning to its original theme of exploring the unique experiences of growing up Black in America, a topic not often explored in depth on television.

In a conversation with Deadline following the conclusion of season 6, showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll shared her thoughts on this matter.

…the heart of the show is our teens, and especially our teens of color, and the journey to the dream while they’re battling their identity, while they’re battling their community and all these other things that come their way that could be perceived as obstacles. How do you surpass those to still get the joy and get the dream? That is at the heart of All American.

As a long-term fan of this game series, I can assure you that some familiar faces from the original cast will still be present. The creators aren’t planning on starting from scratch by replacing everyone (doing a “clean sweep”). There’s simply too much story left to tell! They intend to develop the stories of the characters we’ve grown up with, who were once navigating life as high schoolers filled with uncertainty and making mistakes.

While it’s reasonable that “All American” should refocus on its successful elements, given Ezra’s central role and fans’ deep engagement with the ensemble cast’s stories, the show lacks a primary character without him. Each of the other characters has achieved their goals or is on the journey toward doing so.

This sports drama drew me in (beyond my love for the genre), as it resonated with the sense of possibility I experienced at a certain point in life. At that stage, the future seemed wide open, and every choice could significantly alter its course. While circumstances shaped the landscape, the ultimate direction was still uncertain and malleable.

As a gamer, I can relate to how those formative teen years are filled with intense emotions and significant choices that carry real consequences. The show “All American” masterfully captured this experience, drawing me in with its authentic portrayal of the drama common in teenage life.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m excited about this new beginning for the show. With a fresh start, we can go back to the basics while keeping in mind all the incredible moments it has given us over its six seasons. But let me tell you, revamping a show isn’t an easy feat. There’s always the risk of losing viewers and leaving fans feeling like they’re starting from scratch. However, Carroll’s inspiring words about the core of the series resonated with me: “It’s all about those teenage dreams, no matter how impossible they seem, and joining them on their journey to make them a reality.”

The unique thing about “All American” is that it may successfully transition to focusing on another character’s story. This is partly due to the fact that we have witnessed Spencer James achieving his goal of playing in the NFL, winning the Super Bowl, and marrying Olivia Baker. Moreover, given the show’s knack for portraying compelling journeys, fans could develop an attachment to the new leading character just as they did with Spencer. The writers merely need our trust to deliver another captivating storyline.
