The home entertainment release of Alien: Romulus alters the look of CGI Ian Holm.
The film titled “Romulus” premiered in American cinemas last August. This production, helmed by Fede Álvarez, takes place during the time gap between Ridley Scott’s “Alien” and James Cameron’s “Aliens”.
Back in 2020, I lost a beloved figure in the world of cinema – the extraordinary actor, Holm, who brought the iconic android character Ash to life in Ridley Scott’s Alien. In an intriguing twist, when Alien: Covenant was released, they paid tribute to Holm by utilizing his likeness, with the blessing of his estate, as they introduced us to another android character, Rook.
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Álvarez expressed some reservations about how Rook looked in the final version of the movie.
What did Fede Álvarez say about Alien: Romulus and CGI Ian Holm?
In the heat of post-production, I found myself running short on time to perfect every detail. Some shots didn’t quite meet my standards, as the CGI felt a bit too apparent. I can understand why some viewers might have reservations, and frankly, I wouldn’t fault them either.
Álvarez claims that the home entertainment release of Alien: Resurrection has corrected the issue by changing Rook’s appearance.
He stated, ‘We’ve significantly improved it for this immediate release.’ He managed to persuade the studio that it was necessary to invest in the project and provide ample time for all involved parties to complete it accurately. The result is outstanding.
As an enthusiast, I’d like to share some fascinating behind-the-scenes trivia! Shane Mahan, the mastermind behind animatronics, created Ian Holm’s animatronic for Lord of the Rings, utilizing a head cast from the film. Remarkably, this was the sole existing instance of its kind. For the home entertainment version, we decided to delve deeper into puppetry, and I must say, it significantly enhances the experience!
The science fiction film titled Alien: Romulus featuring Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu is now up for grabs in 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD formats. Additionally, you can stream it on Hulu.
