As a seasoned gamer and die-hard fan of the Alien franchise, I must say that Fede Álvarez has truly outdone himself with Alien: Romulus. Having grown up watching Ridley Scott’s masterpiece, I can attest to the sheer dedication and passion poured into this film. The way they matched the lighting and color with footage from the original Alien is nothing short of impressive.
In the role of director for “Alien: Romulus”, Fede Álvarez aimed to create a movie that closely resembled Ridley Scott’s original “Alien” in appearance. Given that “Alien: Romulus” takes place between the occurrences of “Alien” and “Aliens”, it was crucial for Álvarez to craft a film that fit seamlessly within that cinematic universe.
During an interview with SFX magazine, Álvarez detailed their method of aligning footage from Romulus with Alien, achieving a harmonious blend through matching the illumination and color schemes.
As a dedicated gamer, I can confidently say that we’ve got the original 35mm print of Alien scanned, and I’ve compared it directly with ours. It wouldn’t matter much unless we put in the hard work during production to make our version stand out.
In creating the sets, Álvarez and production designer Naaman Marshall found inspiration in the artwork of Ron Cobb, particularly his designs for the movie Alien.
As a game enthusiast, I unearthed a treasure trove of unused concept art from the films we’re working on. Fascinated by these unseen visions, I found a way to draw inspiration from them and breathe life into our current project.
What to Expect in Alien: Romulus?
As I ventured into the grimy depths of an abandoned cosmic outpost, a band of us space-faring youths stumbled upon the most chilling creature the cosmos has ever spawned.
In this sci-fi series Alien, the characters are played by Cailee Spaeny as Rain Carradine, David Jonsson as Andy, Archie Renaux as Tyler, Isabela Merced as Kay, Spike Fearn as Bjorn, and Aileen Wu as Navarro.
Alvarez serves as director for the movie “Alien: Romulus,” which he and his longtime writing partner, Rodo Sayagues, jointly penned. The production team includes Scott, Michael Pruss, and Walter Hill.
Originally, it was planned for Romulus to be released on streaming platform Hulu. But then, 20th Century Studios changed their strategy and decided to debut the film in theaters on August 16, 2024.
