Swedish performer Alexander Skarsgård has shared his experiences of unsuccessful auditions that he faced during the initial phase of his acting career. The star of ‘Murderbot’ confessed to feeling extremely discouraged, believing himself to be a terrible actor with absolutely no self-assurance, following auditions that didn’t go as planned and left him feeling utterly disheartened.
Alexander Skarsgård opens up about aftermath of bad auditions
Alexander Skarsgård discussed his past struggles during difficult auditions that left him feeling unclean. At 48 years old, this Golden Globe-winning actor shared honest accounts of his tough journey to Hollywood stardom on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast “Dinner’s on Me.
In less-formal terms, the actor playing Murderbot admitted that there were instances when he didn’t feel a connection with the character during auditions. But since he was worried his agent might let him go, he decided to attend anyway.
Skarsgård admitted, “I’ve had those situations – they were difficult – when I auditioned for roles that didn’t seem suitable for me, and I couldn’t establish any connection with the character. Yet, I was in a position where I felt unable to refuse the audition.
Nevertheless, the disheartening results following those disappointing auditions were equally distressing. The actor confessed, “I experience a bit of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), as I recall the sensation of returning to my humble but dismal apartment in L.A., often shedding tears in the shower after such a day. I felt soiled within my spirit and, essentially, lacking in self-assurance.
Apart from struggling with unsuccessful auditions, Skarsgård also grappled with crushing self-doubt. The True Blood actor confessed, “I felt like I was the most terrible actor in existence, and I had no dignity because I went in for these auditions. I was just wasting their time.” It’s a tough sensation to endure.
In spite of a difficult start, Skarsgård persisted with his film career, eventually landing a breakthrough role in 2008’s Generation Kill on HBO. Later, he garnered significant recognition, including a Primetime Emmy, Golden Globe, and Critics’ Choice Television Award for his work in Big Little Lies.
At the moment, Alexander Skarsgård is featuring in Apple TV’s sci-fi comedic series titled “Murderbot.” In this show, he takes on the role of the main character, the renegade SecUnit known as Murderbot.
