A fresh update about Taika Waititi’s proposed live-action adaptation of ‘Akira’ from THR has proven to be less than encouraging.
What is the latest on the live-action Akira movie?
As per a recent report from THR, it appears that Warner Bros. Discovery has abandoned plans for a live-action adaptation of Akira. It’s said that the movie rights have been returned to Kodansha, the original publisher of Katsuhiro Otomo’s manga, which was first released in 1982.
THR’s report indicates that creators and other key figures are positioning themselves to connect with the property in anticipation of future presentations. Regarding Taika Waititi’s long-delayed film, this suggests the project has probably been completely abandoned.
Akira’s film production journey has been a protracted and intricate one, spanning over two decades. In the year 2002, Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the widely acclaimed manga, initially planning to have Stephen Norrington (famous for Blade) as the director. However, this marked the commencement of what The Hollywood Reporter referred to as a “development limbo,” with screenwriters and directors such as Garry Whitta, Mark Fergus, Hawk Otsby, Steve Kloves, and others associated at various stages.
In 2017, it was announced that Taika Waititi would be penning and directing a film adaptation of a popular manga series. The movie was slated for release in 2021, and preparations for casting were underway, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Unfortunately, due to his involvement with other projects, Waititi never returned to this project.
First published in 1982, Akira unfolds in a dystopian and advanced “Neo-Tokyo” setting, with Shotaro Kaneda, a gang leader, and Kei, a militant revolutionary, among its central characters. The graphic novel was adapted into an animated film in 1988, widely regarded as one of the best films ever produced and significantly contributing to the global recognition of anime as a cultural phenomenon, although it does differ substantially from the original narrative.
