Ai Weiwei is Bringing a Massive Camo-Covered Installation to New York City

This fall, I can’t wait to witness the incredible outdoor installation by renowned artist and activist Ai Weiwei at New York’s Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park! It marks the start of their Art X Freedom program, where artists are commissioned to create powerful public works inspired by visions of social justice right on the spot.

Entitled Camouflage, this installation plans to dramatically alter the 3.5-acre park landscape. At the southernmost end of the park, an open-air construction wrapped in camouflage material will emerge, concealing Roosevelt’s bust and the engravings of his Four Freedoms beneath a shroud. Similarly, the granite walls bordering the park will be draped, resulting in a dynamic interplay of light, water, and reflections that offers glimpses towards the United Nations headquarters.

The design concept for this park, inspired by Louis Kahn and connected to the UN, is intended to stimulate thought about vulnerability, defense, and, in keeping with AI’s style, the elusive nature of truth. As Ai himself explained in a recent declaration, “The idea behind this project is grounded in the English word ‘camouflage,’ which, according to the Oxford Dictionary, can refer both to a method of disguise and concealment and as a means of creating illusions for protection or deception.

The piece of art employs the symbolism of camouflage to initiate a conversation on identifying what necessitates preservation and unveiling what hides the truth by concealing itself. Though this topic can be complex, it’s crucial that we grapple with it.

From September 10th to December 1st, you can check out the exhibit on camouflage. For further details and updates, visit the park’s website.
