Agatha All Along’s 1st Episode Was Born Out of Axed WandaVision Pitch

As a fan who has been following Marvel’s intricate web of stories and characters for decades, I must say that Jac Schaeffer’s creation, Agatha All Along, is a delightful twist on an already captivating character. Having witnessed Agatha Harkness’s introduction in WandaVision, it was fascinating to see her backstory unfold in this spin-off series.

The idea for the first episode of Agatha All Along came from an axed WandaVision pitch.

Last week, the fresh Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series titled “Agatha All Along” made its debut on Disney+. In this series, the character Agatha Harkness, portrayed by Kathryn Hahn, returns to the screen. Jac Schaeffer takes on the role of showrunner for the program.

Previously, Schaeffer, who currently oversees three episodes of Agatha All Along, was responsible for crafting the 2021 Marvel Studios production, WandaVision.

What did Jac Schaeffer say about Agatha All Along’s first episode?

In an interview with Variety, Schaeffer revealed that his initial idea for WandaVision, proposed even before the series started having a writing team, was to incorporate a “CSI-style” episode that mirrored a typical television crime drama.

As the concept for WandaVision, centered around family sitcoms, emerged, the proposal for a CSI episode was temporarily set aside; yet, once Wanda agreed to star in Agatha All Along, Schaeffer revived the original idea.

Schaeffer mentioned that fans of WandaVision enjoy the show because it gives them a deeply engrossing sense of being part of something they cherish. He prefers gritty dramas with murder mysteries, but dislikes the overused “dead girl” tropes due to their exploitative nature. So, for him, working on WandaVision was like a clever trick – as if he were pretending to create one of those shows without actually doing so.

She commented, “Agatha takes pleasure in observing the unflattering aspects of others, such as selfishness, self-interest, and villainy.” She then suggested, “Given this inclination, I believe she would be drawn to true crime stories – not as a spectator, but because I imagine she would view them as highlighting humanity’s darker side.

In addition to Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, Marvel’s series “Agatha All Along” features Joe Lock playing the role of a Teen, Debra Jo Rupp portraying Sharon Davis, Aubrey Plaza in the character of Rio Vidal, Sasheer Zamata as Jennifer Kale, Patti LuPone acting as Lilia Calderu, and other talented actors.

You can watch the first two installments of Agatha All Along, as well as all eight parts of WandaVision, right now on Disney+. Fresh episodes of Agatha All Along will keep coming out every Wednesday until October 30, 2024, when the final two episodes will be available.
